There is a problem I have with my computer that does not allow me to click while holding down a key. This is really frustrating when I am playing a game that requires the WASD keys & clicking. The problem happened just after I had to restart my computer to download the Windows 8.1 update. Could that be the problem?

Edit: For some reason, I can click & hold down a button, but only when i'm hold one of the "ctrl" keys.

Thats odd - Your game probably interferes with assigned keys. T+right click, translate a webpage. A+Right Click saves the webpage you are looking at. At least this is the assignment from within Google Chrome.

Try doing this from within your browser, just to see of those combos work, your game may need to have the keys reprogrammed to other keys that are not already assigned. I used to have to do this all the way back to Quake II.

The thing is, i'm playing a game in Steam (a game you download) & the controls weren't interfering before. Another thing is, I found I can right click while typing just fine. It's something wrong with left click only.

Maybe a problem with the mouse?

Steam is a huge worm can, I cant run it cos my systems cant handle it. But since it depends on Dot Net and DirectX11, its problematic.

Try swapping out your mouse. Check your Settings in Steam, however hell you have to do it, make sure the left mouse is not assigned to something it is not supposed to be assigned to.

I don't think it's a problem with Steam, as it's happens pretty much everywhere on my computer, even the desktop with nothing opened. & I've been messing with the settings on the mouse for the past couple hours or so in hopes to fix it, but no luck.

Does it happen outside of steam?

You know what, I think Mice combos are "Right Click Only"- As far as outside of Steam and the particular Game you are using.

The game you have is probably trying to emulate the action of this:

Have a Look at Valve's Steam Controller in Action | Maximum PC (Click OUT of any annoying ad)

which has left AND right combos.

Has this key combo worked before? If not, you may have to get a Game Controller to use that combo feature.

I just went through a bunch of Left-Click combos using various keys, none of them did anything except enter the character of trhe key I was pressing, into the box here. Is that what you mean, you need to type something like a word while the left mouse is pressed?

So, you are saying, if you hold the left mouse key, you CANNOT enter text at all? That whole sentence was written with the left mouse key held down.

But I'm using a PS/2 Keyboard with a USB Mouse. I tried it on my other system, which has a USB KB and Mouse, it worked there too.

No, i'm saying I can't click while typing. I tried clicking while typing this sentence & it acted as if I wasn't even clicking.
Edit: I'm using a PS/2 Keyboard as well, but i'm using a Synaptics Touchpad instead of a mouse.

Hm, try plugging in a USB KB, just to test it. You may have drivers for special keys, like the Fn key and combos, vol up/down keys, extra displays and projectors.

Depending on what kind of laptop it is, replacement KBs are not that much, from 8 bucks to 20 in come cases. And I have had to replace them in some new systems.

I'm not a gamer, but I use a gamer keyboard because of the quality keys (Cherry Brown). As I understand it some games require simultaneous key clicks and only PS/2 connected keyboards can do it properly. There is a technical term for it, but I forget. For that reason many gamers use PS/2 instead of USB. USB uses a polling system and doesn't handle the simultaneous clicks the same way. If you have a wired USB K/B you can buy an adaptor to plug it into the PS/2, if your computer has one.

That said, it sounds like you are trying to combine a key stroke with a mouse click. That should work, so perhaps there is more going on...

I think we would have to install Steam and then the game he is using so we can troubleshoot this.

I have seen a lot of Modern Laptops, they still have a PS/2 port, it is half-Green and half-purple, to allow adding either a mouse or KB.

I think he said that internally, his KB is a PS/2 KB even though it is on his laptop. There should be no problems with it, unless it is broken in some way. How about with other Operating Systems, did it do this under Windows 7?

Okay, I just created an account to answer this question.
I finished downloading the windows 8.1 update yesterday, and noticed the same problem as OP shortly after. I tried a TON of ways to fix it but none worked.
The Fix is so stupidly easy I literally had to hit myself after finding it.

Windows 8.1 has a new feature called "Click Delay":
To prevent the cursor from accidentally moving while you type, change the delay before clicks work.
Theres the problem.

To fix it, hover the cursor in the top right corner until the sidebar opens, click on SETTINGS, then on "Change PC Settings" in the bottom right. On the new screen, click "PC and Devices", and then on "Mouse and touchpad". The "Click Delay" settings are at the bottom.

Hope this helps

Great, that sounds like you may have hit it! I won't give you a rep until the OP confirms it though.

It's all this unexpected extra crap they have crammed into 8.1 is really what is keeping me on 8. This is a feature I can REALLY do without, thanks for pointing it out. Aw Hell I'll give you a rep just for showing me this POS new bloat feature.

    Eset NOD32 6.x/Win Defend
    Other Info
Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.

Thank you so much for this. I seriously thought I would have to hold down the "Ctrl" key forever when playing games. Now I don't have to . Thanks so much again.
