Cannot run command prompt as admin

Hi,
I need to execute the command prompt as admin. When I try to do it the command prompt window doesn't open and there are no errors. If I run the command prompt without admin privs it works, but I then can't do what I need to do in the admin window.

Can someone help me to understand why this is failing and how I can get it to work. This is a potentially massive issue for me.

Note: I am running Windows 8.1.

Regards,
David

I've tried right clicking on the start menu icon in the bottom right of the desktop - that fails. And I've tried search -> cmd.exe -> right click -> Run as Administrator. That fails too.

David

It might seem strange to describe a "long way" to open an elevated Command Prompt in Windows 8, considering how easy the "short way" is, described above. However, the following procedure is good to know because it demonstrates how you could open anyprogram as an administrator.

  1. Access Run from the Apps screen or press the WINDOWS and R keys together with your keyboard.
  2. Type the following in the Open text box and then press or click the OK button.

    taskmgr

    This will open Task Manager.
  3. In Task Manager, press or click File and then Run new task.

The Create new task window will appear.

Note: Don't see the File menu? Click or press on the More details arrow at the bottom of the Task Manager window to show a more advanced view of the program, including theFile menu.
  4. In the Open text box, type the following:

    cmd

...but don't do anything else just yet.
  5. Check the Create this task with administrative privileges. box.

Note: Don't see this box? That means that your Windows 8 account is setup as a standard account, not an administrator account. Your account must have administrator privileges to be able to open an elevated Command Prompt this way. You'll need to follow the Short Way described above, or use Tip #2 below with a keyboard.
  6. Now click or press on OK and then follow whatever User Account Control requirements appear next.
  7. An elevated Command Prompt window will now appear, allowing unrestricted access to executing commands in Windows 8.

Try creating a fresh shortcut.
Right-click the desktop - New - Shortcut.
In text box, type cmd - then hit Next. Name it Elevated (so you know you've applied admin privileges).
Finish - Now right-click this shortcut - Properties - Shortcut - Advanced - check off "Run as Administrator" - OK

Try that out to see if it works for you.

I can't because it would show my email address and I'd prefer not to do that. However, it does show that my account is an administrator. My account is a Microsoft account rather than a local account. That may be a factor...

You can use Windows Paint to strike out your email address.

Can you supply me with the command ?

You have a bad feeling? What are you trying to say? I think you're reading rather a lot into very little. Anyway, that's your choice but I'd like to hear you defend that statement.

Anyway, I think this is happening because I'm doing it over RDP. The PC this is on is in a location where I can't just go up to it with a keyboard and mouse and mess with it at will. So I have to do things remotely. I a few hours I can but, understandably, I don't want to wait.

David
