Solved Continuous switching between Metro and Desktop

Hi there,

Not sure which subcategory this belongs in, and if it should be moved, please do so, Mr. Manager.

My issue is that I'm working on a machine that is continuously switching between Desktop and Metro several times a second. It does it in clean boot mode (only Microsoft services enabled, everything else disabled), but not in Safe Mode. I'm running SFC /scannow at the moment, and I already ran linux badblocks /sv and CHKDSK (no errors). SMART status is okay, no triggers have been popped and the quick test passed.

Running Win8 Pro on an HP 2000.

Any other suggestions at the moment?

Thanks,
Red

Hi and welcome to WindowsEight Forums.

Any chance of the Windows key sticking?

Perhaps try a different keyboard?

That's really weird! Touchpad issue maybe? Try turning off the touch pad and see what happens? Also, have you ruled out any possibility of malware?

From what I can tell, the keyboard is working fine in Safe Mode, including the Start button. Also, SFC completed with no integrity violations.

Thanks for the welcome! I loved Seven Forums, and look forward to receiving assistance here in the future.

It is weird! A first for me. It will be interesting to see what the problem is.

This is interesting. Explorer.exe now gives a system warning of "unknown hard error" in both normal and safe mode. This might be the cause of the error.

Did you even bother to try my suggestion? If not, please (at least) acknowledge same so I can stop trying to suggest other things. Thank you.

I wanted to update things as they happened. As it turns out, I cannot disable the touchpad through the hardware method, possibly due to the Explorer.exe issue, but that's purely a guess on my part that personally doesn't seem all that connected. I had to uninstall the touchpad in Device Manager, as the option to disabled it was greyed out. Dunno if that's a Safe Mode thing or a feature I don't know about. I have little experience in Windows 8, but I must work with it for my job.

According to the HP 2000 manual, you can disable it by simply touching the screen at the right point and that point is #2 in the screenshot I provided. Simply touch that point and double tap to toggle. The reason I suspected that first is because I doubt that the touch pad would be enabled in safe-mode (but I'm not certain about that).

Running Hitman Pro currently. It's about a third of the way through, and has already found two trojans and a riskware. For now, I'm thinking perform a virus removal, see if it helps, then if not, a repair installation?

Also, the double-tap on the touchpad doesn't work.

Yes but my malware suggestion appears to have been correct; eh?

I never said it was incorrect. Thank you for your help. The matter isn't solved yet, but I'll keep working with it.
