Solved Can't Delete Folder, Shouldn't Have Been There Anyway

I'm a confused noob. I have a brand new machine w/Windows 8 -> 8.1. I had a backup of Documents, Music, Downloads, and Pictures on an external harddrive, from old Win7 machine, that I copied over and pasted into the new machine. Everything seems to be there. But, I have a folder showing in My PC that has the name of my old machine. I can't open it, nor delete it. I get messages saying

"(filename) is denying access to your PC. Contact the owner of the media server to allow your PC to access it."

Initially I would get the same error when I tried to go to Properties, or Expand...but this morning I was able to open Properties (who knows why this time worked and others it didn't) and saw that it has something to do with Windows Media Player Sharing, with a serial number, a MAC address, a unique identifier, and an IP address. There are no tabs in the screen to go to Security or other options.

I've been able to rename the folder...but I want to be rid of it (at least I think so).

Can you advise?

You can also use "Unlocker" - You can find that on Major Geeks. But the Installer has an issue, make sure you don't install the toolbar that comes with Unlocker.

Well...tried Malwarebytes FileASSASSIN and Unlocker (thanks for the heads-up on the sneaky stuff in the install) and was not able to get rid of this pesky file. I can't click on it or drag it or anything without immediately getting the same error. Any other options?

That's odd, it may be a virus.

Try downloading Hiren's Boot CD, burn it and boot, choose "Mini-XP" - It will load a basic XP OS, try finding it and deleting it through there, Unlocker I think is installed into Mini-XP. See what it does. I'll bet there is something in your OS that is referring to that file, so if you accessed the drive from a different OS, you might be able to get rid of it.

If it wont let you delete it, try moving it and then try deleting it again.

I'm so sorry...my ignorance is showing. I went back and looked at it some more, and discovered it's NOT a folder or file, it said it was a device. When I powered off the external Seagate hard drive, the thing went away. I'll be using this as my backup drive soon for the Win8 machine. Do you think I'll have to format it or something in order for it to lose it's association with Win 7 Media Player and/or the current backups from Win 7? The Seagate was just used for periodic copying of Documents, Pictures, Music, Downloads, and .pst files. I use a different drive for a weekly scheduled system back-up, so I guess I could just turn the Seagate on when I need it - but I don't want to be bit in the backside if I should format it to clean it up and untangle the Windows Media Player connection. Any advice? (and again, I'm so sorry for the wild goose chase)

A HA!

You'll have to remove whatever files that were on it that are shared in your WMP Library, just delete them from WMP, but don't click "Delete Files", sounds like you may have added some files to your Library from that drive, the Library will show up in your list of Networked Sources.

Does the Icon say "Media Server" under it? You should be able to right click on the Icon, and select "Remove Device"

(If you have what I think you are seeing)

You're totally right. I had used that external drive to copy my music files from Win7 to Win8, and it had the name of my old Win7 PC.

Cleaned up now. Thanks!
