Solved Big orange arrow stays when I return to desktop

I'm running 8.1 with the old-style desktop, not Metro tiles. If I switch to tiles, a big black rectangle appears on the LHS of my screen. In it is a big orange arrow and the words, 'Switch between apps. Swipe in from the edge to go back to the last app you were using.'

I'm using a laptop, not a tablet. I can't swipe.

Once the rectangle appears, it overlays the tiles screen; search results appear beneath it. When I return to the desktop, the rectangle stays. ESC doesn't get rid of it, nor do any other keys I can think of.

Could someone please tell me how to get rid of this unwelcome intruder?

Thanks,

Mary

I had that happen too but it seems to have gone away on its own.

Is there a black line running down the center of your screen with 3 dots in the center of the line?

Mine hasn't gone away. I have to reboot or log off to make it go away. It makes working or even web-surfing difficult verging on impossible!

No, I don't have a black line down the centre of my screen.

Thanks for that Brink.
I honestly haven't done any of that but these tips have stopped appearing - but I'm not complaining :geek:
I have no idea why

Hi Shawn

That worked. I changed it in gpedit.msc. 'enabled' it, that is. It does seem perverse to click 'enable' to disable something, but it seems to be a consistent W8/8.1 phenomenon.

You've helped me more times than I can count, on the W7 forum and now here - sometimes by answering a question of mine, but mostly through your tutorials or answers to others. I just want to say thank you for all your help since I joined the W7 forum in 2009.

Best wishes

Mary
