System won't sleep or shutdown after 8.1 update!

Serious problem after 8.1 update from windows 8. My Dell notebook won't sleep when idled or lid closed, nor will it shutdown. The screen turns black, and the LED blacklight and fan are still on and cannot revert to normal mode unless I do a hard reset.

Updated to latest drivers and windows update, to no avail. Checked sleep and power options, and they're still the same as before. Please help! Neither Dell nor Microsoft tech support were able to figure this out, and will call back later.

Hello Bazb, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You might check your power availability requests to see if it may help ID what may be preventing your PC from sleeping.

Power Availability Requests - Manage in Windows

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Thanks for the rapid response, Shawn.

When I ran powercfg -request, I got System, Driver, srvnet as the only request. Is that normal or a ed flag?

If I go ahead with Step 2 and override, what exactly will that do to my computer? If something breaks, can it be undone?

    Thanks!

It will permanently override that request.

Before doing that check the items in the yellow TIP box at the bottom to see if turning them off may help first. Those can be turned on and off at anytime.

Hmm interesting. I did the override command, yet the srvnet request keeps coming up every time I check using step 1. Does that mean it won't override? Why is that?

I had a similar issue. After upgrading to Windows 8.1, my Dell Inspiron laptop would no longer sleep. Any attempt to make it sleep would result in a full restart.

It turned out that this was due to the AMD catalyst drivers. Any attempt to remove the drivers using the Catalyst software resulted in a blue screen crash (thread_stuck_in_device_driver). In the end, I uninstalled the AMD Radeon HD 7730M device through the Device Manager, and then installed the lastest AMD drivers from the Dell website. (These are the bespoke Dell AMD mobile drivers. The latest Catalyst drivers from the AMD website don't work.) This fixed the issue and my laptop now sleeps again.

The uninstall of the the AMD Catalyst driver solved my same problem too with Dell Inpiron 17R laptop. Very big Thank You! But very important, you have to turn off microsoft windows auto update, otherwise it will always download and install the latest driver, which cause the problem. And you have to be watch, no install the amd driver when you install other important updates.
But if I put the dell provided driver, the problem came again... Now I use default microsoft videocard driver. For video, flash game its enough, but if you want play 3D game, it is not the best.
