Windows 8.1 Pro Build 9600 Watermark

I have done a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro Build 9600 using a genuine MSDN ISO.

After the installation was complete i did all the updates and after that i decided to activate.

The activation was a success and the watermark disappeared but after a restart it came back on my desktop.

If in CMD i type "slmgr/xpr" it says widows is permanent activated so how come the watermark is still there?

Anybody has some leads to this?

PS: Thanks in advance!

The secure boot watermark? if so, yep! It will stay there until you enable secure boot (or just live with it). No workaround is available to remove it any other way (at this time). Good luck.

OK, well you didn't explain "which" watermark you were talking about so your "Vulcan Mind Meld" did not work on me! Yeah, you have the Windows 8 Preview vversion activated and it will expire in Jan 2014 and that watermark is there to remind you of same. Good luck.

Hello,
I have the same problem. I have an HP laptop that came with windows 8.0 installed. I installed the 8.1 preview and yesterday I updated to 8.1 (final version).
The system is activated but I still have the Windows 8.1 Pro. Evaluation copy. Build 9600 watermark.
I search the microsoft forums and found a possible solution deleting a cache file and re-registering the computer again.
I don't have a serial number (its encrypted on the BIOS-UEFI) but I could reactivate it with the telephone. Still the watermarks remains.
I found a solution taking ownership of two files and editing them or changing them for others found on internet but it's not clean. I have a legit copy of windows 8 so why should I do this kind of stuff.
I also try going back to 8.0 (instead of 8.1 preview) but I don't have any restore point and the HP factory restoring software doesn't work.
So final word... I hope there will be more people with this bug and microsoft may release a patch to fix it one day...

If it is actually activated, I would not worry - It is acting like it was was updated from an Eval copy, are you absolutely positive your ISO was a not a preview? The way you will know is when it boots. If it shows the old-fashioned Vista style OS loader, it's a Eval. If it shows the Windows 8 Logo. it is not. Or, they may be a fish on the Boot Screen.

Just keep using it, it it stops working after a bit, then it was an Eval.

You should go back to there you got it from, and read out what it says about the image. You talking about Microsoft Virtual Academy? Seems to me they would offer Previews there.

The Actual ISOs are all in the Subscriber Downloads section, which you cannot get without a subscription to MSDN- I just tried and it booted me out.

Hello,
The OS is the final version, it boots with the Windows 8 logo and in computer properties it says it's activated (just like the screenshots of the guy who opened the thread).
I'm pretty sure the OS will work fine. It's only a cosmetical issue but the OS it's legit so it shouldn't be there.
I had W8 -> W8.1 preview -> W8.1
The laptop has the W8 OS in a hidden partition but I cannot use it without the HP backup and restore software (that got uninstalled when I upgraded from 8.1 preview to 8.1 final alongside every software like office, chrome, etc).

Thanks, I will try that tomorrow. That patch was originally addressed to a different problem (people who upgraded from W7 to W8 and then 8.1) but it MAY work. I'll test it on Monday (it's my work laptop that has the problem) and let you guys know.

Just to clear up any doubts, why not look up your Windows Licensing Information.
From an elevated command prompt, type

slmgr /dlv

you should see something like this:

I get that but with OEM_DM channel in description and product key channel but it's activated, licensed, rearm count 999, SKU 1001, etc.
I'm going to try the patch now, I'll let you know.

EDIT: It didn't work :(

If the license is ok, just try changing the desktop theme in case some joker has run BGInfo or similar on your machine - right-click desktop, personalisation and check the file used for your desktop background has not got the "watermark" printed on it. Change to another theme, and see if the text shows up there too.
The other thing is to take the licence product key that you have on your installed Windows (or a partial string from it) and search for it with Google - if you come up with a match on the internet, the key is almost certainly going to be blocked at some time.

In regedit:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\PaintDesktopVersion

make sure that this is set to a value of 0.

Now that's an interesting thing, BGinfo, just ran it, replaced my current Wallpaper. I had to re-select my Theme which uses about 20 different BGs.

Everything this guy shows is that he's running an actual real and activated version of 8.1. If someone had run BGinfo, the current Theme will be "Windows"
