If I buy a full install version of Windows 8.1 will I be able to do a clean install or is the Windows 8 key in the bios and going to cause me problems?
My laptops Windows 8 embedded key was ignored by my TechNet 8.1 ISO. I was prompted to enter one. That's likely because 8.1 will only install with an 8.1 code.
Activate retail Windows 8.1 with Windows 8 Product key.
If you buy a full DVD you should be able to install and use the product code that comes with it and not worry about the embedded code. If you follow the tutorial I posted though you should be able to use your embedded key to activate and save the one in the box for use on another PC. You'll need to use a utility like rweverything to retrieve the embedded key from your BIOS. It's not printed on the COA sticker.

EDIT: This may be worth a look see too.
How to download the Windows 8.1 ISO

    Windows 8.1

I did a update install using a 8.1 ISO and a install key. Windows 8.1 installed without a problem. The only thing is I can only do a phone activation. I have my 8.0 key I retrieved using Belarc Advisor. When I went to change the key to activate the option to change the key was not there. The only options was the internet (which did not work) or phone. Right now I'm doing a complete factory install (Yes! I made a factory install disk before I did anything with this computer) then I'm going to try again. If not I'll try your suggestions.

    Windows 8.1

I finally got it by doing a complete install with a retail key that I purchased. I want to thank everyone for trying to help.

Sorry you had to purchase the key.

Probably to no avail, but consider contacting MS and ask for rebate/reimbursement. At least they should be aware of many customer issues.

    Windows 8.1

I'm actually planning ahead. I'm planning on building a new desktop in the near future. If I do I'll convert this back to 8.0 and install 8.1 on the new computer. That's why I bought the full version and not the oem version. At least I know it's not the computer. I'm wondering if the Windows 8.0 that was pre-installed has a corrupt file.
