I just upgraded to 8.1. I have a couple of icons on my desktop on Win 8.1 x 64 and I can't move them. What's the deal with that. I'm using an older version of fences and all of the icons in the fence folders can be moved with no problem. But the two I had outside of any fences are stuck. the properties of each seem to work.

I can delete them but when I recreate them they're stuck wherever windows put them. What the hell. Is there some setting that locks the position of icons on the desktop? This is ridiculous and NOT ACCEPTABLE!

I just read that this "bug" was in the Windows 8.1 preview a couple of weeks ago. What the hell Microsoft? You were just too busy to fix this? This is not an insignificant deal -- especially for those who actually USE THEIR COMPUTERS FOR WORK!

As I mentioned earlier, I have an earlier free version of fences installed on this machine and found a work-around to this stuck-icon issue.
1. right click a rectangle around the icon
2. Choose "Create a fence with these icons"
3. Name it anything.
4. Move the fence folder where you want the icon to end up
5. Right click and choose "Remove the fence"
6. Verify
7. Voila -- the icon is dropped where you have it.

What I can't seem to do is add an icon to an existing fence.

Fix for 'Stuck' icons in Windows 8.1

I just figured this out so I thought others might benefit from this.

I am using Fences as well and all I had to do is right-click the icon and Cut, then right-click in the fence window and paste. Works like a charm.

I hope this helps.

It is a Fences problem and just-released 2.11 solves it. Now, if they'd just fix the individual icon hide option - a year later...

Wow! I removed fences and the problem was solved. I never suspected fences as the cause because I saw this error reported (without mention of fences) regarding the preview release of 8.1. So stardoc found a way to eliminate the free version.

Same problem here and identical fix (had to uninstall the free version of Fences) required to enable movement of any icons around the desktop and/or to drag shortcuts from Windows Explorer onto the desktop. Dirty pool by Stardock...
