I have had win 8 on a Dell PC for several months. In the last couple of months, there is about a 2 minute hang after startup or return from sleep. I just got a message that "it appears that Intel Rapid Start Technology is not installed".

Can someone tell me how to install it?

Has anyone else seen this symptom? (I don't see how it could have become "uninstalled").

Thanks.

Rapid Start actually comes with Machines that have something called VIIV, I've seen it on HP machines.

Try this, it should work even it if is Windows 7 Driver:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=21612

If the Setup will not run, you may have to extract the Drivers from the EXE using WinRAR and then adding them manually.

Your PC should have a downloadable Dell Driver for it as well, type in your Dell Tag Number on the Support Page and it will direct you to a Page where you can download all of the Drivers for your particular machine. You may have to look under Windows 7 Drivers.

Actually, the message is that the Intel Rapid Start Technology appears to not be enabled. This is coming from installed application "Intel Rapid Start Technology".

I am trying to get to setup on bootup to see if there is a way to enable, but F2 key doesn't seem to be getting me to setup (it acts like it is ignoring it). During POST the screen is showing "F12 for boot options" but that isn't having any effect either.

If you have UEFI, you will have to get to it via "Advanced Startup Options" in PC Settings.

But if you don't have UEFI, sometimes you have to press the F# or Esc or Del key immediately on starting the system.

On Dell Systems it's F2, but sometimes it is F1, so try that one too.

Maybe that will fix it, it has to be turned on, I never found out where the blazes to turn on that feature. I had an XP machine that needed that, but it could not be installed on XP- It was on an HP, I think he "downdated" it to XP from Vista, but it had that VIIV stuff all in it and it was causing the whole system to stall at Boot. Finally we had to give up the system, and build a new one, I doubt if that need be done here.

On my rig, the Intel Rapid Start Technology feature has to be first enabled in the BIOS to be recognized in Windows; however, since the OP has not provided a specific Dell make/model number, which key to boot into the BIOS is still a mystery at this point, but it should be displayed on the boot screen at the same time the F12 prompt is viewable.

Update: Just for the record, I have all Intel "fancy" options disabled in my BIOS and I still boot to the desktop in about 7 seconds. Maybe slipped to 8 or 9 seconds since Win 8.1 RTM suggested I turn on Secure Boot. My sleep function works fine as well.

I've got one Dell that's f1, another that's f2, but good idea hitting f12, it should give you the choices to get to it.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Turns out I do have UEFI and no way to get to setup using F2, etc. Instead, I have to use Change PC Settings, then click a Restart button under Advanced. This begins a restart which gives a series of prompt windows, none of which mentions enabling Rapid Start Technology. (I followed prompt sequence: Troubleshoot>Advanced>Startup).

I'm not even sure if this is what is causing my minute-plus hang on startup. I expect to get some help from Dell in the next couple of days. I will update this thread if/when I get a resolution.

The Prompt mentions it but does not give you access to it?

Maybe it has to be done within the Program, look in the Folder where it is installed for any Doc or Read.Me files.

Turns out I do have UEFI and no way to get to setup using F2

That is most likely caused by having the highest level of fast boot enabled in your BIOS. For comparison, I have an Ultra fast boot option in my BIOS which the manufacturer claims will boot you into Windows in 1 second flat. Now, under those conditions it is also noted that I will not be able to access the BIOS via normal F prompts and it, in fact, advises that I should install an ASRock utility to do so (from within Windows) on next boot. However, I see you have found another way of doing it so good for you!

I'm not even sure if this is what is causing my minute-plus hang on startup.

Turn off ALL Intel options (IRST, ISBA, etc) and disable fast boot (or whatever it is called in your BIOS). Retest just to see what happens.

The hang problem resulted from a network printer being connected to computer's Ethernet port. Apparently the startup program chokes on that condition until it finally decides this is an "unknown network".

Meanwhile, a restart through PC Advanced settings seems to have "re-enabled" Intel Quick Start, even though there is no explicit menu item regarding it.

So I'll mark this thread as closed.

Thanks all for your suggestions
