if I upgrade 8 to 8.1 will any programs need be re-installed. I have lots of stuff that I am worried will get screwed up and need to be re-installed if I run Win8 to Win8.1 upgrade when it becomes available. I apologize if this has already been covered somewhere, but it's confusing on what will be changed during an upgrade and what will not. I have Win 8 retail on two computers. One has more programs, utilities, games (simulators), and worry they will get screwed up if I run the update feature when it becomes available. I know I don't have to upgrade. But it's tempting if there are enough improvements. Is there already a FAQ, sticky, etc, on Win 8.1 stuff? Thanx.. ;)

Hello retiredat44,

I believe if you prepare for the worst, you'll come out OK. With that said, I would suggest you create a system image and save it to an external source if you have the means to do so. That way you'll have a recovery path if anything goes wrong. I would also suggest that the "don't be first" rule should apply here so wait a bit before you upgrade. Also, here is an Upgrade Matrix for 8.0 and 8.1 so you will want to look at the bottom half of this page:

Windows 8 Upgrade Paths

Good luck.

I think Program File Programs will be left alone, although you will probably have to re-install any Tile Apps.

Nar, all apps (Store and desktop) will be carried over when upgrading from 8 to 8.1. :)

Two week ago I installed Enterprise 8.1 over 8. with no need to reinstall any of my applications/programs or Windows store apps. Really went very smooth. This doesn't mean others won't have problems.

@Brink

Hi Brink,

It appears that Microsoft has adopted a new policy; whereby, they no longer differentiate between 3rd-party programs and metro apps; however, I would almost be willing to bet my2cents that sometime in the past, they distinctly made that differentiation. So, any comments to that end?

Thanks,

Actually, this is not exactly true. There are some apps that need to be reinstalled. Typically, these are low-level apps, such as anti-virus, virtualization, or networking..

Two I know for sure (because it made me reinstall them) were VMWare Workstation and Cisco Anyconnect VPN client

Maybe next week's final 8.1 GA upgrade will be different though? The only Windows Store upgrade that has been publicly released so far was the 8.1 Preview, and the final version may cope with more apps.
