How to boot from USB stick?

So I got a new laptop and I cannot figure out how to boot from a USB stick that has a Live Image of Linux Mint. Except with my new ASUS, Windows boots so fast that there is never a kernel boot up screen which allows me to hit F12 or anything.
All I need to do is boot from the USB and everything should work, however everywhere I look said I can boot from another device using the Windows 8 Advanced Start up option by holding Shift and restarting the computer. This brings me to the Advance Start-up, but after looking through all the options I could not find a way to boot form my USB.
Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks

Hello mhintzke, and welcome to Eight Forums.

What's the model number of your ASUS laptop?

Double check to make sure that you set USB Support to Enabled.
I'm not sure if it's the same for your motherboard or not, but here's a screenshot of an UEFI on an ASUS mobo to help.

I have an ASUS F75VD-NS51. My UEFI settings looks different and I just tried it and there wasn't anything like that, that I found.

I will try to upload a picture of the Boot menu. There is something called Boot Option Priorities, but I am not sure how to utilize it.

I just found the same in the manual at ASUS below.

The manual isn't very helpful, but it doesn't appear that you have a separate USB setting for this. When you have the USB flash drive connected, restart to your UEFI/BIOS settings, and see if you may be able to set to have the USB flash drive listed as #1 in the "Boot Option Priorities", and the "Windows Boot Manager" listed as #2. You may need to use the Add New Boot Option setting to do so.

I saw that, but was unsure how to use it. It asked me for a path to device, which I was not sure what to give it. Would you have any idea?

If listed, you would select the USB flash drive.

You need to Enable the "Launch CSM" option. If it is disabled, you are basically using Windows 8 secure boot.

I am assuming Mint is not UEFI and not Windows 8 secure Boot capable.

On my ASUS K75DE laptop holding the ESC key down while pressing the power button to boot up will get me a quick boot menu. I get a Boot Options and an enter setup option. In the BIOS if you go to the Save and Exit section you should see a boot override option. That is a one time option for the next boot. After that it goes back to the default boot order set in the boot section of your BIOS. I've used that option to boot from a thumb drive to start an install. Then on the first reboot it boots from the hard drive and finishes the install. You'll likely also have to do what Saltgrass posted. I know the BIOS on my laptop doesn't have a lot of options, not like what you see on a desktop BIOS, so it can be confusing as to what to change to do what you want.

Ok, so I tried all of what you guys said and here is what I've come across.

When I attempt to change the Launch CSM feature to be enabled and hit "Save Changes and Exit", then when I come back to the same menu, the option is back to disabled and not enabled as if it is not saving my changes.

Also, when I try to use the Add Boot Option, there is no option to add the USB. My USB is plugged in when I boot up, but I do not see an option to add it either using the Esc Boot Menu on power-up or by going to the EUFI settings and trying to add it.

I go to "Add New Boot Option" to add a new EFI boot option to the boot order and hit enter. 4 items are listed:

Add boot option
Select Filesystem [PCI(1F|2)\DevicePa...]
Path for boot option
Create

I think I need "Path for boot option". When that is selected it says Enter the path to the boot option in the format fs0:\path\filename.efi

Is this the correct selection I should make, and if so what is the path I should enter.

I honestly have no idea what all this is. I am used to being able to just plug in my USB, go to Boot Option and select my USB. Why is it so much more complicated now...I am a Computer Science student and cannot even figure it out, never mind a regular person that may have to do this.

I have even looked all through the manuals I got with the laptop and there is nothing

UPDATE:

Brink,

I happened to find your article, http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/15458-uefi-bootable-usb-flash-drive-create-windows.html, and followed it even though it is meant for Windows 8 and I am trying to install Linux Mint. I was able to get the USB to now show up in the Boot Options when I hold Esc and Power-on. However, when I do so, my machine takes me to a menu that asks to "Start Linux", "Start Linux (in compatibility mode)", "Run memory test".

I chose to Start Linux, but the screen just goes black and nothing happens for a while. My guess is that I did not properly format the file system of the USB when I used Rufus and this caused a problem in booting up Linux. Are there any changes I should make to the Rufus configuration that you show in your tutorial that would allow linux to work? I appreciate your help! I feel like I am close to the solution
