I am looking forward to 10/18 and getting the Win 8.1 update from the Store to update my Win 8 machine. I wonder if doing the update will modify the partition that is labeled Window Recovery on my HD. I suspect not.

Anybody know?

I recently did an update from the ISO I got from TechNet and it didn't change my partitions a single bit. I would suspect the same would hold true for you as well.

OK, Jeff and thank you. As I understand it, running the 8.1 update will leave the Windows Recovery partition at 8.0 -- totally useless as I see it if there are no plans to return to 8.0 after trying the update.

I will assume you are referring to the large recovery partition present on most OEM installs?

I don't think it will change the image it uses to reset your system, but that would still be relevant for an 8.0 reinstall to 8.1 update.

Because the OEM put an image in that partition, doesn't necessarily mean you have to let it there, but I would suggest putting the original somewhere safe, no matter what else you do. If you decided to change it to a Windows 8.1 version, you might run into version type errors if you try to reset, but I have no way to test that.

Reset will still work on a OEM manufacturer's PC's update to Windows 8.1, but will RESET to Windows 8.
