It's not booting to your Hard Drive. You can set the boot order in your BIOS. It is either F1, F2. Delete, F5, sometimes F10. HP usually uses F10, try that first.

Then set your boot order as follows:

CD/DVD first, Hard Drive second, then it does not matter after that.

Also, in your BIOS you will be able to see if your Hard Drive is being detected, if not, try unplugging the power and Data cables and plugging them back in, HP's are notorious for dropping the Hard Drive, you have to buy new SATA cables constantly. You may need to do this.

We always set the DVD drive up first because if you need to boot up an installation DVD because of issues, then you can just put the bootable DVD in the drive and it'll run when the PC is started up.

If it doesn't have a DVD in the drive or the disk isn't bootable , then your system will go to the hard drive automatically next.

The delay added to the boot time because of this setting is pretty small.

I agree it looks like the system is not being directed to the correct place for the OS. It might then need to look for the correct one to boot. Or, possibly the hard drive is having some type of problem, making it hard for the boot system to read it.

Any chance you could attach a screen shot taken with the snipping tool of your Disk Management window? Use the paperclip on the Advanced replies.

In new laptops and Desktops, you will have a "Windows 8 Boot" entry in your Boot Order. You will want that the second in the list after your Optical Drive.

Fair Warning, ASUS laptops will not boot unless the hard drive or Windows 8 Boot is the first item. So if you have an ASUS, the Hard Drive has to be first. You can use the Boot Manager (usually F12) to select the optical drive.

Your disk management picture looks fine, a normal Legacy install. I was looking to see if you had a couple of hard drives with different configurations.

If it is just delaying on the black screen it may be doing something else. My system will not let me keep the DVD option as the first boot device, and since I use the Boot Menu key anyway, there is really no reason to do that.

Since you don't mention anything about seeing any messages such as PXE or any OpRoms, I assume you have those disabled in the Bios.

PXE will cause a Network Boot script to run. so I don't think it's that, so it may me another OpRom. I used to have one for a SATA card I used, but it would tell you "Press F4" to get into it. He probably needs to set his Hard Drive as the first device.

It could also be true that hsi C drive is not being seen as a C drive bu the system, this happens when installing a new OS where a Recover partition exists, the recovery partition will show up as C. You either have to delete the partition, or change the drive letters somehow, I can do it in Mini XP, you can also use, what is that Command Prompt for changing Drives, Volsnap? I forget what it is, there is a Command that allows you to change drive letters, but it's complicated. I thought it was Volsnap, but that's not it.
