How large will 8.1 upgrade (in the store) be?

For some of us with a slow/unreliable internet connection the upgrade may be a real hurdle. Any Idea of the size of the upgrade? Best guess? Might be wise waiting for an ISO file I think, rather than risk the store method.

Probably up to a Gigabyte at least. But the updater is probably a stub-installer which is a small file. But when it is run, it continues to download files from MS, and a whole MS OS can be several Gigabytes in size.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I would expect there to be a downloadable iso file available as well that you can use to update - there was with the Preview. Then you could download it at your leisure, burn it to disc/usb stick, and install with a bit more assuredness. But maybe they won't make an iso available this time - who knows...

That's what I used, I got the latest Preview ISO. But MS intends to not distribute this OS as a physical, installable DISK.

No, MS will not offer a physical disc, but if one has a slow/iffy internet connection, best to download the iso and take it from there, rather than risk a botched installation. For that matter, perhaps he could download it from a friend's faster connection and then burn it to media.

MS have said that for upgrades from 8 to 8.1, there won't be ISOs which "consumers" can download for free; unlike the Preview, the final version of the upgrade will only be via the Windows Store.

They will sell you a full installer version if you're upgrading from Windows 7 or to install as a system builder, which presumably will be an ISO download or on a DVD, but that will cost you.

:ditto: Everything I have read backs up what you just posted. No ISO for the average Joe.

That is bad news, and IMO, pretty stupid of MS at this point. They are acting as though they are in a position of power, when what they really need to do is win some hearts and minds. I hope they don't blow it...

It could very well backfire on them with a lot of negative press if a lot of PC's end up with issues after upgrading. Especially if it becomes difficult to get those PC's back to the factory 8 install. Some people just won't create the recovery media until its too late.

I don't mind the download method, but like many people I have slow broadband (about an hour an a half per gig to download)

I have 3 Windows 8 machines that will need upgrading, going to be a fun couple of days

Paul,
Won't one download to media suffice for all three machines by using each individual machine's product key? I would hope this would be the case.

Indications are you won't get an option to save any media if you do the upgrade through the store. It will be like updating an app.

That makes perfect Micro$oft sense. It'll be a long process for a lot of us with multiple machines. I'm starting to wonder if the upgrade is worth it, but then MS puts the 2 year limit on us, too. I don't mind, and I'm sure most who visit this site don't mind, but poor old "soccer Mom" and "surfer Dad" will be clogging the help lines for sure.

Here at home nobody I know other than me, is running Windows 8. I have TechNet access so it's a non issue as far as my machines go. I would imagine a rash of new members round about oct 18th though. ;)

Save to media would have been nice

I went through similar when I was a Mac user (just 1 machine though), just left the update running overnight, took about 6 hours

Probably do similar with 8.1, update 1 machine when it comes out to try it, let the other 2 do the update over night

Good job my BB went to unlimited earlier this year, otherwise would have only been able to do 1 PC per month
