There are too many variables to calculate accurately the advent of such an event.

Hello Mibaup,

Yes, in Windows 8.1 the Start button has been added back.

I would recommend to wait until October 18th, then you'll be able to upgrade to Windows 8.1 through the Store (Start screen) for free and not loose anything. :)

Lol, I was thinking that Microsoft might charge for bringing the Start button back...

Actually this is fine for iOS, but not good for Windows 8 or 8,1, because you MUST have an install disk to fix some of the grievous errors that pop up with 8. Updating to 8.1 is fine, but I would not do it until I had a DISK with the exact version of the OS in my sweaty little hands. If I do it at all, which is highly unlikely. Best bet, stick with 8 and use Start8 or Classic Shell, cos 8.1's start button is not a start button.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Just a note: When talking about iOS and Android devices, yes.. OS updates are sort of free.. but in many cases, you simply can't upgrade older hardware to new OS's. For instance, with android devices, your phone carrier has to issue the update, and they typically have to support it.. you are usually lucky to get one major revision before they no longer support updates.

iOS has been a little better, but.. for instance, the iPad 1 was basically dropped from iOS 5, and iPad2 will probably not see an iOS 8. What's worse is that most of the apps stop working on the older OS's, so you can't typically even get new apps if you're running an iPad 1 anymore...

Root + CyanogenMod (et al). There are in fact a myriad of options available.

I honestly think it's much easier to just use the windows key on the keyboard. Either that, or window key+q for app search or windows key+w for settings. I realize that some keyboards may not have a windows key (like macs?).. But in all reality I think the classic popup start menu in the left bottom corner is donesies.

Besides the :orb: mentioned in msg #8.

IF you want a program menu on your desktop try creating a toolbar.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2460-start-menu-toolbar-create-windows-8-taskbar.html

1) right click on your taskbar
hover over toolbars and click on create new toolbar

2) enter %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs in the Select folder box

3) press the Select folder button
In your taskbar you'll see your new Programs Toolbar
click on the >> and you'll see a list of your programs in classical menu style

Adding the desktop toolbar gives links to Computer , Control Panel , Libraries etc.

Hovering mouse over lower left corner then right clicking when start appears offers more options

I'm already seeing the effects of iOS 7, and already there are apps that no longer work for iOS 6.1.2 which I have cos I'm Jailbroken. Usually if there is no Jailbreak fort an iOS, I don't upgrade UNTIL there is one.

My policy is that apps that refuse to make their new versions downward compatible get deleted pronto from my device, and if it is something like Numbers/Pages/Keynote I'll stick with the last version that works for my iOS. App Devs that won't do that extra work to make backward compatibility are not worth bothering with.

But for every iOS app that refuses to make backward compatibility, there are about 15 apps that DO. Apple does this to force you to get their new iOS, so I bear with them.

As far as iOS in general, since the OS of any Mac computer or device is considered part of the hardware, you have to put up with their limitations.

iOS downloads are free, but they are NOT free because I cannot at this time, delete my iOS and install 4.3.3 or 5.1.1 in there, or even any version of iOS 6.

And why do they do this? So people won't revert back to an earlier iOS so they can JAILBREAK. the whole damn thing is stupid, but the eVad3rs, Redsn0wers, and Absinthers have kicked every iOS's ass since the first iOS, and they'll beat the crap out of iOS 7 too. So I'm not worried about it.

The problem with iOS is that it can only be installed via iTunes, and that's where Apple has their CHOKEHOLD over you. I wish someone would create an iOS installer that can totally bypass Apple stupid SIGNING polices. There;s gotta be a way around it, if I were an Apple programmer, I'd work on it.

Not sure about this. I did clean install of 8 (and now 8.1). I've never needed the install disk as DSIM works just fine and I can't imagine a situation when the disk would be required. There might be but I can't think of a situation when it would be required assuming you have some sort of backup strategy. DSIM is one of the best things about Win 8 IMO.

for Windows 8 or 8,1, because you MUST have an install disk to fix some of the grievous errors that pop up with 8. Updating to 8.1 is fine, but I would not do it until I had a DISK with the exact version of the OS in my sweaty little hands.

Thanks for mentioning this. This is a handy tool indeed.

I'm dual booting 8 with 8.1 RP and looking forward to the upgrade. I am fearing the upgrade via the Store. I attempted upgrade via the Store from 8 RTM to 8.1 RP a few times, but it never worked, although I read about a few that were successful. I ended up downloading the ISO to fresh install. That experience to me confirmed once more that upgrades are a PITA.

I don't have an MSDN nor a TechNet subscription to obtain an ISO for fresh install of 8.1 and there's no word yet MS will release one to the general public.

Anywho, you reminding me of this has eased some of my anxiety. For some reason I get this feeling I'll have to use it and from past experience the odds would point that way. May the Force be with us all. :D

I think that in terms of Windows the upgrade from 8 to 8.1 and clean install are essentially the same. The existing windows directory is renamed windows.old and a new directory containing only 8.1 stuff created. This is ignoring installed programs etc. Therefore DSIM will recover corruption based on what should be in 8.1. I have used DSIM at 8.1 (which worked) but I did a clean install so can't say for certain.

If you make a CustomRefresh using recimg after upgrading then you'll never need to go back to 8 and I can't see that you'd need the 8.1 iso. Hopefully. It would be nice though is MS made it available for sure - will have to wait and see.
