.jnlp/Java Web start opens in IE9?

I can't get Java Web start to work properly with Windows 8; every time I click the play.jnlp file it tries to open in IE9, and being that this is impossible it promptly just disappears. Anyone know how to fix this, or even if Web Start works with Windows 8? Probably end up having to switch back to XP if not...

You simply have to right click the file and select Open With and then choose a program that can open the file in question.

Unfortunately, I can't simply right click on it and select which program to open it with because that's not how the file type works. Once you've installed the java package, it is supposed to simply open .jnlp files with Java Web Start. I can't tell W8 to open .jnlp with Java Web Start, as its not listed as an application. I've rooted around in the java files and there is definitely no option to do this; I should mention that my XP, Vista, and 7 computers never asked what program would you like to open this file type with.

Again, any more suggestions would be great, I have to get this working by next week at the latest.

Have you tried another browser for like google chrome, firefox. Download and install it before remove IE10 from Add/Remove components otherwise you wouldn't have a browser to download the file lol.

Won't let me uninstall IE9? Regardless, I have tried other browsers. I see what you're saying about uninstalling IE9, if only I could get it to work...

Why is IE9 even in your Win8?

You should have IE10.

Have you installed Java from the Java website? If not, it might help. As far as I know, it doesn't come pre-installed on Windows 8.

Perhaps the tool simply detects any version of IE and assumes it's IE9.
