Moving to windows 8

Hey, i was wondering if it is still too soon to start trying out Windows 8.
I used windows 7 beta without any problems, because it was ready but needed a little polishing.
Are games compatible with it? Are there any downsides?

From what i could see, the UI changed a lot. It looks like a smart phone, so that's why i was wondering if i should get it early and get used to it.

Thanks,
Alex.

Don't not to sell you house and install Windows Developer Preview over your existing OS as chances are it will expire and you will need to remove it later.

Go the dual boot way, like most of us do.

Hi all

These days dual booting is a no no -- use Virtual Machines -- the only case you might want to dual boot is if you are into very heavy or serious gaming -- plenty are but by no means at all the majority. In any case if you are a serious gamer it's probably better to have a totally dedicated machine available for that purpose.

For everything else - including 3D graphics and dvd playing today's hardware is MORE than capable of running virtual machines with almost the same speed as the Native OS and with vmware version 8 you can run these vm's in the background too so users can logon without even having to have an account on the HOST system.

I'd recommend trying out W8 as a Virtual machine first - you can then compare it easily with W7 without having to re-boot whenever you need something on W7.

Once you've got used to it you might like it enough to install as your main OS.

Cheers

I have issues with IE10. To me WDP is usable but i will get rid of it at the earliest when RTM or beta comes out.

I find myself making WDP look like and act like win seven. After getting rid of the bloat, metro, etc., it reminds me of win 7 but more finicky so far.

Im not going back thats for sure.

Really, Ken, you don't know what you're missing.
The picture password is more than cool (a few swipes of the mouse here and there and no need to use the keyboard).

You're cheating yourself, really, and others, by not diving in.

Metro on a non-tablet pc doesn't do it for me to be uterly honest.

As McDonald's would say, aem, "I'm lovin' it!." :D

Why don't y'all just stick with Win7, then?

You'd prolly love it even more if you get yourself a tablet and use the touchscreen on it, assuming you don't already have one.

Nah, I don't have a tablet but adapting even the pre-beta (alpha) Win 8102 to a PC has indicated this thing is way more than cool.

Mike

I too loved the swipes until the first time it locked me out and my gestures were idiot proof so it isnt "ready for prime time"

Im not cheating myself in that I always try something first, if I like it I adopt it, if not its gone. As for others they should try things for themselves and not rely on anyones opinion but their own.

I do like your cat picture.

You should have had the option to return to typing the password. I have that option.

I understand, Ken, however, this is a Win8 forum not a Win7 forum.
I would hope others learn from my propensity to dive into the intricacies of Win8 (especially here). :)

Thanks! :D

Now that I have WDP working properly it is up til now as stable as Win7 and I have most of my old programs working as well, but like the previous answers I haven't tried out any games yet.
I have left Metro pretty much alone just unpinned several apps but I hardly use it, not even as a menu :(

I think Mike is right. If you install Win8, you might as well use it as is, If you cut it down to the Win7 level, you are better off using Win7 native.

I myself am not a Win8 convert yet. I study it mainly because I would like to get my hand on a decent Win8 tablet one day - a 7" that I can haul around.

I agree in part, but everything that is geared towards touch screen is useless to me :(

If that is your dream I hope it comes true :) I am not adverse to change but I am a very desktop person and at the moment I still have mixed feelings towards WDP despite using it as my main OS. Everything that I can use is very impressive and I sometimes forget that this is early software. I guess I will have to wait and see what the future brings as I will only use a touch screen as a part of my desktop if it is built flat into the desk and if that happens who knows lol.

I am very much a desktop person too. But as a toy, I think a 7" tablet would be fun. Right now I am not sold on Android (the OS that is being held together with rubber bands and scotch tape) and Apple products I do not buy out of principle. QNX would be an alternative, but RiM have their own problems.

Give the 7"s a good try before buying, I find them far to small.
