Old Explorer path view - how?

[Breadcrumbs] Old Explorer path view - how?

Windows 8 Explorer (Winkey-E) by default shows the path in an annoying abstract vs. just the path.

    How do I stop that.

If you click on the down arrow it will show the regular path (per image on right.) How do I set that as the default?

You mean, remove the "BreadCrumbs"? You can do that with Classic Shell, there is a setting for Explorer. Just google Classic Shell and download it, scan it before you install it though, because I found a fake with a virus attached, and it has been floating around previously valid websites. Try to download it from only the developers site, dont get it from cNet or any place like that.

Here, these are the settings you want in Classic Shell Explorer Settings:

    Breadcrumbs”. Hummm.

Twig's Tech Tips: Win7/Win8: Remove Breadcrumbs from Windows Explorer

I hate installing unknown stuff, for the reasons you mention but also on principal. ..Kicking and screaming.

I guess there is no native solution, so the thread is dead-end-resolved.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, and giving me the key search term “breadcrums”. I'll edit the OP to include that for clarity.

The closest you can do is to make it display the full path in title bar from:
Folder Options->View and put a check mark on: "Display the full path in the title bar"

Well, even that native setting will still show "Breadcrumbs" rather than the full path. I guarantee it. To get the full path, you have to click on the icon at the very front of the "Breadcrumb". There will be either a little hard Drive or a little Folder at the front of the path. But you have to be careful, because sometimes it will create a shortcut to it inside of the Folder. You have to click RIGHT ON that little icon to show the non-breadcrumbed path.

I use Classic shell, I agree with your reservations about 3rd party apps. I promise that this link here:

Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements

Is the program made by the developers and it has nothing else in it.

It's a link to SourceForge, who supplies programs like VLC. I've never been virused from Sourceforge ever. But it you type in Classic Shell into Google, you will see all kinds of download links. DO NOT use any of them, except for the link I gave.

If you don't trust it, you can ask. Windows 8 can be made to work like we want, but sometimes the only solution is to install a 3rd party app.

Many people in these forums use Classic Shell, and I use it because it was suggested to me by someone here, it was one of the first things I asked when I joined. That was about four months ago and it has never given me any problems.

If you change your mind and install it, you will immediately see it's advantages if you ever do a Search from an Explorer Window.

If you are like me at all, you will need the Explorer window to show the exact path in the address bar, so you can select it and copy it. That's why I have always hated those breadcrumbs- I do a lot of copying and moving. Topgun's solution, although it will show you where you are at, won't allow you to do copy the address into the clipboard. But if that's all you need, then it's probably the best solution for you.

Actually, pasting in paths is exactly what I need it for. You can do it, it's just gawky. You have to click on the down arrow on the right to make the field current, then copy or paste.

WAIT - found the shortcut keystroke - Alt-D. Oh yeah. Problem solved without having to install anything. That' what I'm talking about.

But hey, wait a min – I can't right-click and search a drive within Explorer...? That's a whole new kettle of dead fish. It's a must. I had a related question about search, but I suppose it's best to start another thread.

(I'll buckle on the shell app. It's only a matter of time. Thanks for the proper link!

Re: "F3". Interesting ... I posted the more detailed question Here: Can you control ~cache~ on Start menu search?

Re: adding Breadcrumb" to OP - I edited the title in the OP, but it doesn't change the actual thread title - that breadcrumb will be lost to time. tears in the rain... ("More human than human" is our motto)

I guess that makes sense because of the URL - and because people would abuse it. People would definitely abuse it.

I found by experimenting that if you click in the address pane, to the right of the breadcrumbed path, it changes to the path with slashes and selects it.

Or, if you right-click there, you get options to copy or edit the address.

But I don't think the default path format can be changed.

Also, to copy the complete path to any item:
Select the item in its folder, then click "Copy Path" at upper left.
