I upgraded my Windows 7 to Windows 8 pro back in November. Windows explorer has always had issues but now I cant open windows explorer (any way) without it crashing and reload. In SAFE MODE it seems to work fine. I have tried disabling all the Services (non MS) and the Startup function but in normal mode but Windows Explorer still crashes.

I'm definitely not the only one experiencing this issue. A quick search online shows other people reporting their Windows 8 explorer frequently crashes. Is there a solution or something I should try to see if it can resolve the issue? Any help would be appreciated.

Some suggestions:

If there is/was an associated error message with the crash, please provide same.
Did you include disabling ZoneAlarm as part of your troubleshooting process?
Would you consider doing a refresh to see if that works for you? Read instructions and ramifications here:

This is usually because of some third party application that has added a context menu or other shell extension. Many of those have to be upgraded with a new operating system, and some are just plain unstable. You should look through your installed applications and think about any that might have added any context menus and see about removing them or upgrading them.

I have a feeling I will end up having to do the Windows 8 REFRESH (thanks for that great links) but I just hoping i could find something easier. And yes when I disabling all the Services (non MS) and the Startup function - I did all of them including ZoneAlarm.

I also ran ShellExView and disabled all non Microsoft context-menu. Last night it seemed to help and I was actually able to start up Windows Explorer and use it. This morning it started crapping out a few times creating is dump and restarting but no where as bad as it has been over the past week. Thanks.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. Once I did the re-clearing of the context menu my windows explorer is now working again. I have had the occasional windows explorer crash but it is liveable now. Thanks for all the help.
