Hi,

This is my first post on this forum. I've been searching for a solution for my problem for a couple of days and found nothing, so I hope I can find some answers here.

I'm trying to make a certain program (a game, actually) to run as soon as I boot the computer. So, I don't want to click on anything to make it run, just press the power button on the pc, boot and the program should then automatically start.
I thought this was easily done by placing the shortcut in the startup folder, yet it doesn't appear to do anything. When I go to task manager and check the startup programs the program I added is there, yet it doesn't start.
There's nothing wrong with the program itself cause it works just fine when I click the shortcut... But I still have to click it.

This is very frustrating as every source I've checked tells me it should do as I intended.
Any help here would be very much appreciated.

Greetings,

You could try scheduling a task (the app or whatever) to run at logon ...

I would go with Superflys recomendation and use task scheduler to start the program when you log in.

@OP: That task scheduler fix was clearly identified in the post I recommended. did you read it?

@Superfly and @Wullail: Did either or both of you know that fix off the top of your heads or did you have research it (like I did)? Just curious to know so I can entertain adding either one or both of you to my Guru list. Also, did either of you read that linked post as well?

I never posted because you had it covered.
I use task scheduler to open explorer.exe on Startup to bypass the metro screen.
A useful tool. :)

OK; thanks for that. I've never had to use it so I guess that's why I had to research it.

Nope I didn't have time to read that... was busy typing my post - by then yours was already there ..LOL

(BTW there are iilegit KMS services that run a task to keep activation interval at 180 days by this means - sorry if that's prohibited to talk about here..)

Hey Superfly,

Now that you mention it, I do see that time coincidence so kudos to you for your proposed solution! Hence forth, I'm going to cut back on any additional research regarding things that I don't have first-hand experience with because, in this case, it was just a waste of time on my part.

Please keep it up.

I find I sometimes stumble across other things whilst googling certain things, that someday may come in handy in a different scenario...:)

Having just recently switched from Windows 7 to the latest version of Windows 8.1, I found this thread while searching for a solution to this problem (and it's only one that helped me solve the problem) and I just wanted to mention my experience.

I put shortcuts to 2 programs in Startup. One program runs just like it should, but the other program never runs. BUT, the second program runs just fine if I click on its shortcut in Startup. Following the various links in this thread I found a post where someone suggested putting an entry in the registry, so i did that and now the second program runs at startup like it's supposed to.

Using the task scheduler or editing the registry works, but, you shouldn't have to do either one of those. The whole point of the Startup folder is to, you know, run programs at startup. There is a definitely a bug in Windows 8 in this regard.
