Can't wake netbook with wireless keyboard/mouse

hey all,

i have a wireless keyboard and mouse (combo) plugged into my netbook (acer aspire one 522) and can't get the netbook to wake from sleep mode with either of them when the lid is closed (i always keep it closed other than this for this workaround).

i had set the power options to 'do nothing' when the lid is closed (only for when it's plugged in), and when i try to wake from sleep, the power and WLAN lights on the netbook flash whenever i move the mouse or press keys but nothing else. i have to open the lid, then press a key to wake from sleep, then i close the lid again.

i checked Power Management settings for both keyboard and mouse and they both have the check box ticked for 'Allow this device to wake the computer'.

i'm using Windows 8 Professional 64 bit.

any ideas?

thanks!

Hello Matt26,

This issue of a wireless keyboard/mouse combo not being able to wake a computer seems to pop up frequently. However, there is not a clear-cut path to a fix as every situation is unique so I would suggest we start off as follows:

First off, when you say

i have to open the lid, then press a key to wake from sleep

are you referring to the built in keyboard or the wireless keyboard?

In any event, please open an elevated command prompt, type/enter "powercfg -a", and provide a screenshot of the results as shown below:

BTW, you opening post was well written and clearly explains your issue. It would also be great if you had a wired mouse and/or keyboard to do alternative testing as well. If so, please test and report those results.

both, actually- i can use either the netbook's built-in keyboard/mouse or the wireless keyboard/mouse once the lid is open- which strikes me as weird... as far as i know there aren't any changes in power state when i open the lid (that i've set anyways).

here's the output from the powercfg -a command:

The following sleep states are available on this system:
Standby (S3)
Hibernate
Hybrid Sleep
Fast Startup

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Standby (Connected)

i don't have a wired mouse or keyboard.

Ok, thanks for that information. So, you have the "close the lid option" set to sleep if on battery and do nothing if on AC. BTW, your power config options look fine. Can you give us you laptop make/model number and spec information? Also, are you using USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 for the wireless?

correct.

i have an acer aspire one AO522 (model BZ499), here are the specifications for the series- a couple of notes- i've upgraded mine with 4GB DDR3 1066 MHz memory and a 480GB SSD.

Acer Support: Acer Aspier One AO522 Series Netbook Specifications

it's a USB 2.0 wireless keyboard/mouse combo.

Thanks for that. OK, are you using Acer Power Management software to control your ACPI options or are you using the standard Windows 8 Power Management System? If Acer, look for an option to allow Windows to manage my power settings and make the switch and retest.

no acer power management software, just what's in Windows 8.

fyi, the OS is a fresh install- i wiped the hard drive completely before installing windows 8.

Try switching power plans between high performance, balanced, and power-saver and option each one to 'do nothing when the lid is closed." Also, try toggling the USB Selective Suspend option (for each plan) as shown in the image below:

thanks, i tried all that and unfortunately still no go.

what i don't get is that both wireless keyboard and mouse work fine to wake the netbook as long as the lid is open partially- meaning i can open the lid just enough to press the netbook's space bar, and instead move the wireless mouse or use the wireless keyboard and they both work fine.

that part has me confused!

Hi Matt26,

I guess I can safely say that I am totally confused as well. However, I do have one last thought. Is this a blue-tooth wireless arrangement? If so, is it using the built-in antenna in the laptop? If so, the signal would (most likely) be shielded from the antenna if the lid were closed but even a tiny opening (in the lid) might allow the signal to get through. In any event, I think you need to grab a wired mouse and do a test with that.

not sure if the wireless combo is using bluetooth or not (don't think it does), but the reciever (as far as i know) has no interaction with any built-in antenna from the netbook- USB receiver plugs into netbook and that's how the wireless combo communicates with the netbook.

i've also tried moving the keyboard and mouse to be directly in front of the receiver with no luck.

Ok, thanks for that response. At this point, I'm plum outta ideas but I still think it would be worth a try with a wired mouse. Good luck and sorry I couldn't help you. Cheers!
