try here:Default File Type Associations - Restore - Windows 7 Help Forums

otherwise, rename filename.bat as filename.cmd

It has since occurred to me that you may have file extensions hidden, and that your filename.bat is really filename.bat.txt, and therefore is not running, being a text file. in Windows Explorer, View tab, Options, View, uncheck the box by "Hide extensions for known file types"

I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish here but when I right-click a .bat file and select edit, it opens in NotePad; however, when I right-click and select Run as Administrator, the .bat file executes if properly constructed:

I'm assuming you set notepad as the default action for .bat files with this.

run regedit

Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT in the registry.
Search for ".bat" under this key.

Click on this key , it should show this on the right panel.

What exactly are you trying to do?

To edit the .bat file, right-click and select edit.
To run the .bat file, right-click and select Run as Admin.

What else is required? Or does my above suggestion not work?

Hello 99lool, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you have not already, you might see if downloading and merging the .bat option in the table in the tutorial below may help. It will restore the default associations for .bat files.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/8486-default-file-associations-restore-windows-8-a.html

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn
I have tried this already.

Please try again, but make sure that you approve all the prompts from step 4 for it to work to restore the default association of .bat files. :)

You can associate BAT files with Command.Com in the area in Controil Panel where you set file associations, I have BAT able to be opened by Notepad, but by default they open with command.com

.reg files by default open with Regedit, just set the associations, or right click on the file, choose Open With, go all the way down to the bottom, and choose Use Another Program, then find Regedit.exe and then it will be set.

Do the same thing for the BAT files, tell it to use Command.Com.

Hm - Ok, maybe it is something else, I just checked on my machine and it says "Unknown application" - I'll have to search my registry, hold on...

Ok, merge this:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bat\PersistentHandler]
@="{5e941d80-bf96-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

Copy that, into Notepad and save it as "Bat.reg" then merge it into your Reg, then try a batch file.

If it don't work, open Regedit and search ".bat" - check all the search boxes, and take a look at the entry, post it here if you can

I'm using Windows 8, but the registry should be similar, when you search for ".bat" in redeit, there should be only 2 entries, the ones I showed, do you have another one? Do a full search for ".bat" in regedit, paste the results here for any one that looks totally different than the ones I posted. (Or, maybe I missed one).

I'll do some more checking.

This may explain why they are not starrting when you click on them:

batch - Repair BAT file association (to make it start again) - Super User
