Solved Cannot Boot?

Today I was shutting down my computer because I received the issue of 'plugged in, not charging...' once again. When it was shutting off everything shut down but the power was still on (the blue light on my laptop keyboard was on, it's off when the laptop is off).

I then decided to force-shut down my laptop by holding down the power button. After doing that I tried to turn it back and it refused to go past this screen:

After waiting for a while and returning from a shower it then went to a black screen which only showed my mouse icon. I installed windows 8 about 6 months ago from the official website for a fee; I didn't use a boot disk.

What's wrong? How do I fix this? Any support is appreciated.

I have plugged in my factory DVDs to see if I can restore my computer to factory defaults, but I've come across an issue:

The factory DVD's are for Windows 7; I installed Windows 8 from an online downloadable file which I paid for from Microsoft.
The recovery option is "Restore Operating System and Retain User Data". This option is greyed out; most likely because my current operating system is windows 8; not what my laptop originally had.

How should I back up my data so I can restore my laptop to factory defaults and transfer it over when I'm done?

Well, if the drive is readable you will have to get a USB drive caddy and pull the drive, put it in the caddy. Then use that to transfer files to another computer or another drive through another computer.

Only thing that comes to mind in your situation if you want to try to save some data from the drive before re-install of system.

I've been in similar situations before and bought a caddy quite some time ago. Has saved me (data) several times.

Expand on this??

They make drive caddy's that have a single or double USB plug on one end and an open SATA port for the drive on the other end. You take your drive out, put it in the caddy then use it like any other external drive on another computer. You can access your files and get the data.

I have saved many applications including Steam, games, etc, from total loss this way.

Mine is an old one made by StarTech but works well. Should be able to get one locally or online quite easily.

UPDATE: I think most newer ones are enclosures now, mine is just an open stand like port on the drive end. Not sure it is available anymore. Nice though because the drive just plugs in without messing with a case.

Found it. They still sell it online. It is a StarTech SATDOCK25U.[h=1][/h]

Did you not make the back up DVD?

Hopefully his data/apps will get placed in .old right?

I've never had much luck doing a complete upgrade/re-install and maintaining ALL third party apps. Maybe I'm stupid. :(
