    If all above didn't work...

    Hi guys,
all the solutions above didn't work with my PC (with OS Windows 8.1), but maybe I found a solution by myself; hope it can be helpful.

Note: first I merge the DLL.reg file on my Register and then I tried the IconCache Restore; still my .dll icon were wrong.

    So, try this:

Open regedit and search the key:

Then, on the right, among the list of values look for the one associated with .dll.
    Mine was:

(as I try to Open a .dll with Wordpad and got into trouble as you already know...)

    Delete the line.

    Then go to the key:

this key seems to content only the file extensions that need a Program to Open.

Open the key and look for \.dll (so you are at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Roaming\OpenWith\FileExts\.dll)

Delete the key (if any) called UserChoice
    and you're done!

This procedure worked fine for me and my system seems to be stable; still....

p.s: don't know if it's necessary delete both of the above-mentioned keys, or maybe one is enough...
