    Freezing Mouse Pointer

the same time, I hear a "tee-dunk" tone from the speakers. I have looked in Task
Manager at all the processes running and checked them all online to see what
they are. They are all processes that are supposed to be there. I use Microsoft
Security Essentials daily and it hasn't found anything. Outside of being
bothersome, this hasn't caused anything to slow down, so I am at a loss. Any

This is exactly what I am experiencing! Right down to the "tee-dunk" tone. Has

My story: I updated to Windows 8 from XP when they were offering
the $40 get it now deal. (I was hoping to get the 64bit version, but they
detected that I had the 32bit XP, so that is what Win 8 version they gave me to
download--maybe that is all my system can handle...but, I digress...). Ever

His is the only exact description I found to my mouse's malady when I researched
what the problem could be. That's why I registered to this Windows 7 forum
instead of the Windows 8 one. (update: I registered in this Windows 8 forum for additional exposure)

I just had my wife read this and she
suggested that my mouse might just be too old and is having conflicts with the
new Windows OS. This seems reasonable. My computer system is ~8 years old.

    Any help with this, please?

Wired mouse? If yes its likely a broken wire in the cord? If it's a really old mouse it might be time to buy a new one anyway.

It's simple to check If the sound is related to the mouse disconnecting.
Disconnect the mouse yourself and listen for the sound.

If you hear the same sound, then (most likely) there is a problem with:
    • Your mouse
    • The mouse cable (if it is a wired mouse, as alphanumeric posted)
    • The socket on your PC

Ok, I think I got it. As the mouse didn't make the audible every time it froze, I couldn't be sure if the sound heard when disconnecting/connecting the mouse were the same. Anyway, I barrowed my son's mouse and had no freezing. It looked like the mouse itself was creating the issue. I unplugged his and plugged back in mine to use until I purchased a replacement. Now, my mouse is behaving--no more freezing. I have unplugged and re-plugged my mouse before, but have not plugged in another USB mouse until my son's. So, either my computer updated the mouse drivers when I connected his, or plugging in my mouse the last time just made a better connection, my mouse is now working fine. If it gives me trouble again, I will just go ahead and buy a new one, since it seems the trouble is in the mouse, not Windows.

Thanks to all who submitted inputs to my dilemma.
