Logitech E-Mail Video Files Don't Play on 64-Bit Windows 8

Hi everyone.

I recently clean installed the 64-bit version of Windows 8 on my computer. The software I use on a daily basis works properly on it, but I do have a question about one thing.

I have a couple of old Logitech e-mail videos. (They’re at least a dozen years old, possibly a little older. They’re in Logitech’s proprietary format, to the best of my knowledge, and cannot be converted to AVI or some other video format.)

Ever since installing the 64-bit version of Windows 8, I cannot play these files. They have played properly on the 32-bit version, as well as previous versions of Windows.

I’ve tried troubleshooting it and using various compatibility modes, with no success. So, I was wondering if anyone might know a possible workaround or solution to this problem, so I can play these files.

Thank you! Jd

What file extension do the videos have? Have you tried downloading VLC and seeing if that can play them?

The Logitech E-Mail files are executable files with the .EXE extension. They are not playable on VLC.

Those are actually self-extracting EXE video files. They extract out the Video plus a little player.

*.exe video file?!? [Archive] - Doom9's Forum

You will have to use Windows 2000 or maybe even XP to view those. I've seen em, I think they open in XP. Try setting the Compatibility of the File to Windows XP sp3.

The problem is, you can't PLAY these videos in any other environment. There is no warez or free or paid video conversion program that can handle the content, it contains an EXE file as well as the video.

But the whole thing should be a self extracting RAR or ZIP, try opening it in various decompression programs: WinZIP, WinRAR, 7ZIP.

The other issue, is do you have your 16-bit support turned on? If this is not available in 64 bit Windows 8, then you'll have to use 32 bit Windows 8. It';s just mroe argument as to the flexibility that 32 bit OSes still have over 64. A 64 bit OS should ENCOMPASS all previous instruction sets, 4 bit, 8 bit, 16-bit - NOT lock them out.

Open them with WinRAR, - Extract the Video component out, then try to play it in VLC.

I was unable to do that.

What did it do when you tried? It may also be a CAB file. You just have to find the right compression codec.

Also, I distinctly remember that these files had an option to Save the video out of the container.

When I tried using WinRAR, absolutely nothing happened at all. Not even an error dialog box. When I tried 7-Zip, I did get an error box saying I could not open the file as an archive.

Like this:

Open Control Panel and search for "16-Bit" - You should see this:

16bit.png

Click on that, and it will allow you to turn it on. If you search and there is NO "16-Bit" support, then you can't do it. Unless you are on a 32 bit machine.

WinRAR would at least have choked on it, and spouted an error message. It HAS to be some kind of Archive - Can you right click o the file and show Properties, if it is an archive at all, it should inform you what kind of archive it is.

And you CAN'T run the Exe's at all, right?

:( :( :( :( :(

This explains why you probably cannot open the file, and even why WinRAR does nto seem to respond to it:

64-bit versions of Windows do not support 16-bit components, 16-bit processes, or 16-bit applications

There is NO 16-Bit support in ANY 64-Bit Microsoft OS.

And you gotta have it to open those files, I'm about 95% sure of that.

This is why I insist on sticking with 32 bit OSes, there is NO measurable increase in performance for 64 bit OSes, and they are RESTRICTED.

So I've got an idea, send me just one of those EXE files, and I'll see if I can extract the video component. Let me set up some place where you can upload it for me. I may need your email address, send it to me in a PM of you want.

I understand. I was giving my word I would not view it. I totally understand not wanting anyone to see personal videos, I have done work like this in the past and did not view the content.

The best bet wold be to find someone with XP, install WinRAR, and see if you can open the EXE file that way and get the video component out of it. If that doesn't work, then you may be able to find some kind of Screen Recorder that can make a video out of a viewing of the EXE file. I'll try to find a program that does that. for you.

See if the evaluation version of this will work, Ill keep looking
