Laptop takes 30 minutes to boot

Hello,

I have an old laptop from 2007. I bought windows 8 licence (was using W7) and it was working great for the few months. After that it stopped. Now if I want to boot it, or restart it or shut it down it takes at least 30 minutes which huge sound coming from it.

I got a new laptop today, but I still want to use my old one. As I think a laptop is a girl, it has to be perfect :D

P.S: It takes 1 minute to enter the windows 8. And 29 minutes to enter the metro layout (it keeps loading).

What do I have to do.

I have faith in the members here!

Hi,

Have you made sure ALL updates and App updates (via Store) have been done.

Also, the fact it gets into the Windows 8 fine, but the Start screen (aka Metro!), appears to be maybe an issue with the Graphics drivers - check them in Device Manager.

Hope this helps.

PS. Also try looking in Task Manager for any App/software that might be trying to startup - this could be delaying things.

Does it do this every time? Make sure you have 1) No USB attached 2) No disks in the drive 3) No Printers connected when you try to boot.

The fact that it is loading suggests that either the system was working or it was hung up, check your Startup Items (in Task Manager) and look in your System Event Log. Post anything interesting you find here, you can actually export your system log and zip it and paste it onto your reply. Plus any images of all of your Startup Items, they are in Task Manager next to Details.

Thanks!

You can just open the Event Viewer right after booting, and show only those items from the last boot, under "System" - Make a screenshot. There is a way to export the log, it's in the interface.

Going by all the disk errors I see in your event log I would say there is a good chance you have a failing hard drive, unless you have an external drive hooked up.

Yes, he's right. Download Hiren's Boot CD from my link below, burn it and BOOT to it, I don;t care how you do it, do it.

Go into Dos Programs and then go into Hard Disk Tools.

In Hard Disk Tools there is a program called GWscan - Run it - If it accepts your drive run the 1st 2 tests. If the drive has a SMART error you will NOT be able to fix it. But if it has Read Element Failure, this can be fixed by running the advanced surface scan, step 3.

If GWscan does not read the drive, then you will have to use the Hitachi or Toshiba tool, if either of those comes up FAIL, you can still get around this by using ViVard: IN ViVard, run a Smart Remap. Warning, it will take up to 4 hours, maybe longer. But it will fix any drive that has read errors as long as the SMART is ok, and sometimes it can fix the drive with certain smart errors.
