Deleted Windows.old - Now stuck in the Auto Repair

Hi all,

I run a copy of Win8 in a Bootcamp partition on my Macbook Pro and stupidly deleted the Windows.old folder manually rather than through the disk cleanup and now Win8 wont startup. I now get stuck in the Auto Repair and none of the Advanced features seem to work.

I originally installed via a Win8 upgrade bootable USB and that isn't being recognised by the Auto Repair when i try to restore.

I don't mind losing the data in the partition (i only use it to run a Windows program needed for work), but the issue here is that i don't have an original Win7 image anywhere to reinstall - only the Win8 Upgrade bootable USB thumb.

Is there any way i can fix this without having to find a full image of either Win7 or Win8 and reinstalling from scratch? Is it failing to boot up because for some reason things were still pointing to the Windows.old folder?

Thanks for the help.

The Problem with Boot Camp is that is does not boot like a PC, so the Auto Repair won't ever work right- Disks like Hiren's Boot Cd don't work in Apple, and neither do any of the Auto Repair functions on the Windows 8 install disk. The USB disk won't boot right either, unless you get it to start and then choose Repair Options, and go into Command Prompt. If you cna do that, you can use the Bootrec /scanos and then /rebuildbcd commands - And you'll have to run that from the x:\Windows\System32 folder.

If you can find ANY Windows 8 install disk, you can probably do it, all you need is the Command Prompt from within the recovery environment.

Thanks for the reply.

I manage to get into Command Prompt through advanced options, can you please provide a little more detail on the Bootrec /scanos and /rebuildbcd commands?

Edit: Ok just tried both those commands, i get this error:

IN the Command Prompt that is at X:/sources

type C: (or D, whichever partition has your Windows Installation) - Do a DIR before you try anything, make sure it is the Windows Partition.

then type CD Windows

then type CD System32

then type Bootrec /Scanos

After that, run Bootrec /RebuildBCD

If it found Zero, then your installation cannot be repaired, you will have to reinstall.

Try a Bootrec /Fixmbr and then do the other two again.

You can use Hiren's Boot CD to move any needed files off of the partition before re-installing. Wait, not you can't, it wont run on Boot camp, you can try it, you need to run Mini XP.

What you'll need is to install an NTFS reader for Macos to allow you to move the stuff off of the windows partition.

Ok i think i somehow fixed it. I ran chkdsk /r and rebooted - then windows did a scan and everything booted up ok after that.

Phew.

Thanks so much for your help!

Good - But you should run GWscan just to make sure there are no other physical problems with the drive. Always run CHKDSK from the Install CD if you can. Actually, you installed 8 into Boot Camp, that's an accomplishment in itself.
