*PLEASE HELP* Cannot Boot Win 8

I was writing an email and randomly my fairly new and perfectly working laptop kept freezing and showing Disk 100% in Task Manager so I restarted. After that my laptop is stuck on "automatic repair mode" whenever I power on and none of the options work. I have the options to "Continue to win 8" "use a device" "troubleshoot" or "turn off my pc" NONE of these options are working! :( If I click anything it just freezes.

How can I recover some important files I had on my desktop? I didn't have any partitions! I'm not able to boot with Ubuntu, win 7, or norton ghost DVDs. I even set the DVD drive to boot first in BIOS. Please help! I'm new to win 8

It's a toshiba satellite s855d-s5148
AMD A10
ram 8gb
HDD 1 tb

You can download Hiren's Boot CD and burn it, boot to it and go into Mini XP, you can use that to move your personal files off of the system drive. Then at least you could re-install 8.

But I think your hard drive has developed problems, on the same Hiren's CD, if you go into Dos programs you will see Hard Disk Tools, you can use those to test your drive and fix it. GWscan is what I usually use for that, run the first 2 scans and it will tell you if you have read error or not, if it does, do the 3rd full scan, and it will fix your drive up. Usually 100% disk and long aperture circles mean you should scan your drive anyway. Give that a try and see if your drive has developed read element failure. Windows 8 causes this a lot.

Oh Yah, if you have a Toshiba system, you will have to use the Toshiba disk tool, it's in there. If it says there are "too many errors to fix" - Then you can use Vivard, do a Smart Remap. But it will take up to 4 hours, do not shut off the system while it is running or it will wreck the drive.

Yah but the idea that they are locking out the Optical Drive to "MS-Signed ONLY" Disks is preposterous. That's gotta be shut off right away, people use all kinds of Non-MS OS's not to mention utility disks that need to boot. The normal person who knows how to do this, is not going to stick a whole disk full of virii into their systems.

MS are not locking out the Optical Drive to "MS-Signed ONLY", some OEM manufacturer's are.

Some OEM manufacturers are locking end-users out of the options in UEFI/ BIOS firmware on consumer PC’s, to install other OS's in UEFI mode, so you can only install Legacy mode, on business PC’s there not.

Windows Hardware Certification Requirements for Client and Server Systems

Microsoft said:
Mandatory. On non-ARM systems, the platform MUST implement the ability for a physically present user to select between two Secure Boot modes in firmware setup: "Custom" and "Standard". Custom Mode allows for more flexibility as specified in the following:

It shall be possible for a physically present user to use the Custom Mode firmware setup option to modify the contents of the Secure Boot signature databases and the PK. This may be implemented by simply providing the option to clear all Secure Boot databases (PK, KEK, db, dbx), which puts the system into setup mode.

If the user ends up deleting the PK then, upon exiting the Custom Mode firmware setup, the system is operating in Setup Mode with SecureBoot turned off.

The firmware setup shall indicate if Secure Boot is turned on, and if it is operated in Standard or Custom Mode. The firmware setup must provide an option to return from Custom to Standard Mode which restores the factory defaults. On an ARM system, it is forbidden to enable Custom Mode. Only Standard Mode may be enabled.

Guys, so you think next I should try to get secure boot off somehow and boot one of the CDs? My only other option here seems to send the laptop back to toshiba after somehow backing up my files..

I'm thinking to remove the HDD and use a HDD reader with another laptop? Any further suggestions? Thanks!

If you can get that Secure crap shut off, and boot to Hiren's you can use Mini XP to move the stuff off.

If you can get Hiren's into a USB flash drive, mayme you'll be able to boot it than. Use iso2disc to change the bootable ISO image into a bootable flash drive.

That would be the easiest way, save you playing around in the UEFI/BIOS firmware.

Would this help:

Restart your computer and press F8 or delete key or F 12 after the POST screen to bring up the boot menu. Choose 'boot in safe mode with command prompt.'

If your system gets to the command prompt successfully, type in rstrui.exe and then press enter. Follow the on-screen instructions to restore your computer to a previous saved point.

You would need a restore point to use though...

If F 12 isn't presented as an option when you boot up, you need to enable it in the BIOS.

You also have to tell the system how LONG to show the F12 option, usually 2 seconds is plenty of time. On must systems, they notify you which keys are for what on the boot screen, sometimes they are shut off by default and you have to hit "show" as David posted. On mine, F8 is the Boot Manager not F12, but on the HP, it's F12. On other systems it's Escape, others still it is F2.

They user manual usually tells you which F keys do what.
