Long Black screen during startup (no cursor)

Hello,

I recently upgraded my dell 1645 from windows 7 to 8.

I installed most of the drivers from the dell website even though they were meants for win 7. For some of them I installed drivers directly from the device manufacturers website.

When the computer first starts up it passes the windows logo, and then a black screen is shown (no cursor) for a good 5 minutes. Then it advances to the login (seatle cartoon image) and everything works perfectly.

I had another issue before that I think I solved which was the intel rapid storage technology. Whenever the computer would go to sleep I got a windows BSOD saying driver_irql_less_than_or_equal. But after installing the newest intel rapid storage drivers sleep seams to work perfectly.

The drivers I installed from the manufacturers that arent on the official 1645 driver page:

- ati radeon drivers from ati
- synaptics drivers
- bluetooth 380 drivers, supposed to be 370 I believe but it seems to only be 380 available which people say works.

I also tried running the intel chipset automatic check, which said I was on the latest.

What else can I do?

Welcome to Windows 8 Forums.

1) Does it do this every time?

2) DO yo have any HP Printers or any USB hard drives connected? Sometimes, Printers, HP and Epsons, want to stall the computer on boot. If you do, try unplugging them all and try booting again.

Let's start with that, if you don't have any USB drives or printers, we can try something else. Notice, a CARD READER can do the same thing if you have a card reader in the system. Check Windows Update for any driver updates for Card Readers, they usually show up there.

It's a "Studio XPS 1645", right?

It does it every single time. Another thing I forgot to mention is that I tried enabling/disabling "turn on fast startup"

I don't have any printers connected except over wifi. I can try removing that.

No usb drivers either.

There is a card reader that was initially needing an upgraded driver but nothing is listed now in windows update.

I just checked in device manager and the HP printer is listed 2x under "software devices"

Try the Ricoh drivers, see if those help. The thing is, it boots, so it is doing something that is taking a LONG time during Bootup - We can look in your events log for any multiple instances of errors, they will have the big red "!" -Look for bunches of them in a row.

If your Printers are Wifi, maybe it is waiting for the Wifi Driver to load and then detect the device before moving on. Don't remove em, just disable them and try booting. If you have two instances, we'll have to remove all of the HP drivers and re-install, which is a pain.

Also, I don't remember how, but we need to boot and log the whole process - I can't remember how to do that, if anyone knows how then please chime in. But we need to know which process is taking a long time during bootup, there should be something about it in the Even Viewer.

Oh Yes, if this was an Upgrade, we might try using the DISM command, there is a tutorial on how to use it, I'll try to find it. Maybe some things went whack when it was upgraded.

wow so after installing the ricoh drivers you linked the black screen only lasted about 30 seconds or so. Much much shorter and I would say possibly normal?

For some reasson though the synpatic software did not load this time, and I can't seem to scroll with 2 fingers.

Maybe it is because the synaptic software did not load that the startup was quicker?

Where should I look in the event viewer to see what is going on during startup?

I didn't mention this either. But I never installed the wifi printer. I think windows 8 just detected it on my network?

I think I should install the HP software.

It was an upgrade, But I wiped the hardrive and installed fresh.

the synaptic drivers loaded eventually. I guess i just jumped the gun. Scrolling is working now.

The Touchpad service is probably delayed start.

Good, I knew it was something to do with the Ricoh drivers. Card Readers are basically USB devices, and bad or lack of drivers can cause that 5-minute boot scenario.

30 seconds is better than 5 minutes, I'd say this was normal. Now, Hibernate your system and see how quick it starts after that. You should have a Quick/Rapid Start as well, make sure it is turned on. It has to be turned ON in the BIOS though.
