Solved Data CD not being read

I'm concerned that I might have disabled a utility using Task Manager's advice for saving memory.

I put in a Data CD and it isn't noticed. (Audio CDs are rocognized as "Audio CD" with no ID info). I went to the Windows troubleshooting page and clicked the "fix it" link and the CD was picked up but the next time I put one in the same thing happened.

Any advice much appreciated!

Edit: after I fixed it I tried several data CDs that worked but the next time I restarted is when the problem returned.

Once you choose a default action for a CD, USB Drive, etc - It will not ask you again when you insert it subsequent times, unless you install a new program that can open it, and then it will notify you that there are new programs that can open it.

Open "My/This Computer" and look at the drive and see if it reads - It could be that the drive is insterted and reading. Also, make sure the CD or DVD is clean, and has no scratches on the TOP. A scratch on the bottom can be buffed out with a compound, but a scratch on the top will take Data away with it. And, sometimes Data CDs and DVDs that are burnt fail very fast. Sometimes, even manufactured disks do the same.

If it will not read or if it reads some times and not others, it may need a BIOS update, some Optical Drive makers like Lite-On in particular, seem to fail right at the moment a new Firmware Revision is available. You will have to know your exact make and model to look for new Firmware, you can find this out with Aida64:

Aida

Thank you. I can't show an Aida screenshot because I'm using GIMP. But it doesn't show any new drivers under the CD drive (driver has a date in 2006). The device manufacturer seems to be LG.

Dude, I don't think you need a driver. It play's music disks. Thus the data disk is probably dirty. Use a sponge and dish detergent to clean the disk and dry it with a towel. The drive itself's lens could be dirty. It's alway's good to have a CD/DVD Cleaning Disk or kit. I think they only run $8 - $12. Well worth the money.

I also suggested that it may be Dirty or Scratched - However CD's which are REDBOOK AUDIO are NOT the same kind of filesystem as DATA disks - So a bad DVD/CD+R may indeed play RedBook Audio CD's no problem but still CHOKE on DATA disks. Not the same filesystem at all.

Not to mention I have had LG Optical Drives fail to continue to read disks when new Firmware came out. I've had to download new firmware dozens of times. Firmware is NOT a driver, is a BIOS for the Drive.

After that is lists the LG site for support and firmware download. I emailed LG because I can't match what's above with their product options.
This happens with multiple data CDs, including a brand new one, so I'm not sure it's the disc.

The unit seems to not be listed on the LG site, it's actually a Hitachi-LG drive,

LG Manuals, Software & Firmware Updates | LG USA

It will be under Computer Products - Burners and Drives - Internal DVD burners

But there is no GU70N

There IS a firmware update for this, A103 - It's usually on rcp1.org - There was a request for it, but it's not there anymore. You have A102, need A103. I'll keep looking.

Is this a laptop drive?

The closest thing I could find was this, but I need to confirm that it's the same drive as yours

DVD-RW 16X HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4166B Drive Firmware Update | HP® Support

I DID find the A102 firmware revision, but that's what you got already.

I am starting to think you will not be able to find the FW for this, it's too old.

You can search for "HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GU70N" an dyou will see a bunch of resuklts from "DriverAgent.com" - DO NOT downlaod any of those, they are all viruses.

You know, I don't think you gave me the proper results. In Aida64 it should have given you the exact name of the drive in "Device Description"

It's under Storage -> Optical Drives

it will show you the drive letter and right after that, it will give you the exact name of the make and model of the drive. You sure it is Gu70n? Cos there is absolutely NO firmware for any device named that on the whole net so far.

Yes, this is a laptop drive for a Dell Inspiron.
Using the Storage ->Optical Drives path, Device Description is E:\ ... GU70N
Firmware revision A102
Firmware date 10/10/12
Manufacturer Hitachi-LG

Maybe LG or Dell will have more information on the phone. I'll try that... Thanks again for all the help.

But I don't get why it would be too old if it was installed in 2012--did they install outdated firmware?

Ok, may have been dirty - Blow some air through there.

DELL will have the firmware revision for it.

Use the "Detect System" and let it install what it needs, then it will open a page with your exact system, they'll have the firmware revision for the Optical drive listed. You want A103 not A102. They no longer make these. So if it keeps up I suggest getting a new drive, if it is not a laptop. Even if it is, sometimes you can buy a replacement from them, under "Accessories"

Hi there. New to the forums as I have a specific problem that is identical to this user's and wanted to see if there's anything more you can tell me. I downloaded AIDA and the information is exactly the same and I'm having the same problem: my dvd drive has stopped detecting readable media. I'm stumped and have spent so much time searching for help that I'm pulling my hair out. I tried finding firmware on the Dell website but no luck...nothing listed for this exact product. Any additional thoughts?
