If you don't have a recovery disk, how did you determine that you don't have windows.old folder?

But since you determined this, you know how to access your drive and copy your personal data to another disk. Then just do a clean install or restore the system to factory conditions per user manual.

Before I reset windows 8, I had no windows.old folder. My computer does not have a manual at all. I tried installing linux but it still said no OS was found.

Linux usually won't allow you to see the contents of an NTFS partition.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I'm installing Ubuntu onto the laptop, Will this allow me to do anything with it? e.g, download a windows 7 ISO and upgrade it with the windows 8 key?

Linux usually won't allow you to see the contents of an NTFS partition.

Linux can read and write most filesystems, including FAT32/16 NTFS, EXT2/3/4, etc. So the OP could boot a live Ubuntu CD and pull off his data onto thumb drive.

It doesn't look like you're interested in pursuing my leads, so I rest my case after making just two points.

Before I reset windows 8, I had no windows.old folder.
It's created during refresh.

My computer does not have a manual at all.
It does, and I suggest starting at page 61 of the mobile manual.

Does it have a recovery drive where you could reset it to factory specifications ?

Just to clarify, I bought my laptop as a demonstrator model and It only came with a power cord and the thing itself. I do not have any recovery disks.

I wasn't talking about recovery disks, as in CDs or DVDs.

Most computers have installed in them a recovery partition you can use to return the computer to factory specs.

Okay I am familiar of when I had a recovery partition back when windows 7 was installed but when I had windows 8 I don't really remember having one. Is there any way to access it?

Should be able to access it by booting into BIOS, if you can.

That's more complicated than it sounds so I made some pictures.
First off, you may not even be able to boot into BIOS.
But, if you can do what's in the pictures:

This should return it to factory settings.
If it can be done.
With no operating system present, it might not work.

Alright I tried to get to the windows recovery menu but it didn't show up on the boot manager. I guess I will have to download the windows 7 cd then.

So you followed the steps as outlined above by DavidBailey ? Used F12 key ?

Very strange. If you had Win8 previously installed, the boot options and recovery options should appear. Possibly will not work, but should appear.

How old is your computer ? Any chance of hard drive failure ?

Should you use Win8 in the future, I would recommend using the Reset feature vs Refresh feature. The Reset feature also has an option to retain all your files.
