The boot configuration data for your pc is missing/errors

Hello. Last night I set Acronis Disk Director to merge two partitions on my C drive.
I had an unnallocated 100mb that used to be partitioned as system reserved, but I deleted that partition as it was not needed. So I made a new partition out of that unallocated space and set it to merge with my primary partition on my c drive. It restarted my computer and 40% through, showed an error and restarted quickly. Now I get the following message when attempting to boot my computer:

File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc0000225
Info: The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors.

The second partition, that I attempted to merge, now has 1mb of space on it. Whenever I try to run chkdsk on the primary partition, it says that the disk structure is corrupt and uunreadable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need my c drive recovered.

The system reserved has The Boot Configuration Data for your PC.
I had removed the system reserved partition when I first installed Windows 8 several months ago. It was working fine until I decided to merge the unallocated 100mb that used to be the system reserved partition into my primary partition.

Try this:
From the Repair CD/USB:

Note: You may need to do startup repair 3 to 4 times.

When I launch startup repair via disc, it says "diagnosing problems", then my computer just restarts, without telling me anything.

It looks like Windows is not detecting your Installation- Try booting from the Install Disk, go into a Command Prompt and try "Bootrec /Fixmbr" then "Bootrec /Scanos" - Also check your BIOS boot order, and make sure the drive with the Windows Bootloader is the first drive. This may or may not be the drive with the system files on it. For instance, I have Windows 7 and 8 installed on my system, and the bootloader for both systems is in the drive with 7 in it. Bootrec will allow you to set it to the drive with the system files on it.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I unplugged all drives but the drive with Windows on it. Bootrec does not seem to help, as it still reports 0 installations when I run "Bootrec /rebuildbcd".

Try putting all the drives back in, run it again.

If it is not finding the system files, could be a drive problem, download Hiren's Boot CD from the link below, boot to it, and go into Dos Programs/hard Drive tools. Find GWscan and run it on your system drive, see if there are any Read Errors on it - If there are, trhe program will offer ti fix, do it, it takes about an hour.

Yeah, trying to use the cd command in cmd from the win8 disc does not work because "the file structure is corrupted and unreadable". I'm currently having Seatools "fixing" the hard drive, although I don't think it will work, I'll report back once it's done, it's been running for about 2 hours now.

Okay, Seagate tools did nothing, I'm at a loss of options here. I'm currently running the drive through Testdisk in an attempt to rebuild the drive's boot sector and MFT.

If you can use Seatools, you can use GWscan - Try That, it will detect bad sectors. You can also use ViVard to do a full Smart Remap - It's a risky procedure, but I've done it a few times to full success. Sometimes the drives have too many read errors for the OEM scanners to fix, ViVard can fix them all. Seatools and GWscan it won't even try to fix it if there are to many errors.

Ok, it was acting like the drive can't be read, something else corrupted your Bootloader. The Bootrec /Scanos is acting like Windows 8 has never been installed. Is the directory tree still intact inside? You can use Hiren's "Mini-XP" to see if you can read the drive, and you can either copy your data files out to a safe place, or to a different folder on the drive.

If it's not a drive error, it may be irrecoverable, Windows 8 can only repair itself when it finds itself, and it's not finding your OS. So something important got deleted or corrupted. Usually it is that Winload.exe file - Look, try this:

boot to Hiren's and choose Mini XP. Open Explorer, see if your drive is still there and readable. If it is...

Do a search for Winload.exe - See if there are any dupes of the file, you are looking for the version of the file that has the earliest date of creation, and we want to copy it into the folder that contains the one with a later creation date. Keep both files, just rename the one you are replacing.

I'm wondering at this point if even there. I'm checking for the location right now, in my system (32 bit) it's in the System32 folder, on 64 bit systems, not sure if it's in the same place. But the file should be 1040kb - If yours is a different size, it may have been replaced.

If this doesn't do it, get ready to reinstall Windows 8, you can use Mini XP to move all of your stuff to a safe folder and then you can delete the rest of the folders on the drive, since the drive is OK, it should be good to use for a fresh install.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I have a similar issue. I now have to boot from CD in order to load my system.

This is what happened. I installed a (2nd) new hard drive identical to the one I have (Seagate - 1TB Sata III 7200 rpm 3.5")
And then started my desktop PC, (Running Win 8.1) went into disk management and did a complete format of the the drive. Before doing so the type of drive selected was MBR and I named it JMA D:
Afterwards, I made the mistake of choosing to "Mark the partition as active". When I went to reboot, the computer did not find an operating system. I did some research and unplugged the new drive, used the bios to load from CD and was able to log in. Shut down and then was able to start normally. Shut down again, plugged in the new drive, used disk management to reformat the new drive and then put it online. This time i did not "Mark the partition as active". Originally my C: drive was shown as disk0 and the new disk was show as disk1. Now they are reversed. The C: which is "Active" had made a system reserve space. I looked and saw a temp directory was made. I "Explored" the c: drive and saw it also had a Temp file, which contained older boot info. I moved the new system reserved space folder marked Temp into the C:temp file and then formatted the system reserve partition.
(Dumb, Dumb Dumb, I know now.)
Anyhow, the computer will only boot if I use the Windows 8.1 disc, while pressing F11, and telling it to load from the c: drive.
If i do not do that, it ask which removable disk drive do I want to load from?

I have tried using the advance repair tools, and it looked like it "Corrected start up problems" but will only restart correctly one time, and then goes back to looking for a disc each time I restart.
Is there anyway to corrected the problem with out having to reinstall my OS on Drive C:

I tried Bootrec /Fixmbr from the startup disc admin command prompt and it shows problem fixed, but it is not fixed.

I'd hate to have to reinstall all my programs again. Capture1.JPG

edit: Note that these instructions only work if the hard disk has an MBR (Master Boot Record) partition table. Here is some info about MBR and GPT partition style: link

Step One:

Change the secondary drive to the primary drive.

Step Two:

- Boot the computer using the Windows 7/8/8.1 installation media.
- On the first screen, press SHIFT+F10 to bring up command prompt.
- Run the following commands at the command prompt.

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd

The bootrec /rebuildbcd command will search for Windows installations not included in the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) and then ask you if you'd like to add one or more to it.

Note: If you receive the error message "Element not found" when you execute the "bootrec /fixboot" or bootrec /rebuildbcd command, then you must first mark boot partition as active with diskpart. Note: If there is a partition labeled "System Reserved", it is the boot partition, if not, the Windows OS partition is the boot partition.

diskpart
select disk 0
list partition
select partition # Note: Select the "System Reserved" partition (if you have it) or the Windows OS partition.
active
exit

genet,

Thank you for the response.

Do you mean i need to simple switch the connectors that hook up to the Sata 6gb/s connectors on my Mother board first? Then try to reboot?
Or is there some way in Disk Manager. (None I see)

Awaiting your advice!

Thank you in advance!

Okay,
So looks like the drives are corrected, and then when I ran the:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd

They all showed they were corrected!

So it is fixed, if I use the shut down. Then it starts normally.

But when I use "Restart" it always goes to the screen that shows my 2 external disk drives and ask me to select one for booting.
The only way to get the choice to load from the C: drive is to Ctrl-Alt-Del-, and then tap F-11 key in order to show all my boot devices i.e, Dvd/Cd, USB ports and the two hard disks.

Also note, that if I choose to "Cntrl-M" and enter Bios, all I see is the 2 hard drives (unconfigured) and really no way to make any changes there. X58a-GD45 Marvel bios

Any further suggestions?

Here is the new configuration in disk management and I also ran checkdisk. The results look good as well.
