Cannot open 'run' prompt as administrator Windows 8

When I right click on run and select open as administrator, I get the following error: file:////C:/users/pc/appdata/roaming/microsoft/windows/start menu/programs/system tools/run.lnk The parameter is incorrect.

It doesn't give this message when trying run anything else as an administrator as far as I can tell, but it definitely will not let me open the run prompt as an administrator, which presents some obvious problems.

I have the only user account on this computer so it does have administrator privileges although they are not invoked simply from opening the run prompt normally.

P.S. I apologize if this is the incorrect area to be posting this question. If it is the wrong area, please move it to the appropriate one. I didn't see any other topic that struck me as appropriate for this question.

Thank you.

Sounds like it might be some kind of invalid shortcut. Can you please provide a screenshot of where you are when you right click. Are you sure it is not the command prompt you are right clicking? However, if it is, could you please try depressing the Win key + X and see if you can access it via the menu shown below?

Here is what I was trying to do so I could do some things that require an elevated command prompt...I was trying to run as administrator and then enter cmd. This apparently doesn't work...is it not supposed to?

Anyway, what you suggested does work to run a command prompt as administrator, but I'm still curious as to why 'run' cannot be opened as an administrator...if this is the case why is the option even there?

Wow! Thanks for that; however, I can't even find that menu on my rig, so teach me how you got there... or is this somehow a Toshiba specific add-on configuration? Also, BTW, your original post yields a path-name to a folder that (most likely) doesn't even contain the run executable and that may be why you are getting that error.

It's an add-on by Pokki to give Windows 8 a start menu. There may be better one out there, but this one was free so I got it as soon as I could because I found Windows 8 to be extremely painful to use right away. It works, but like I said it's possible that there are better ones.

I looked at the folder and you're right, the path points to somewhere that doesn't contain the executable. But this raises the question of why in the world does it work when I click 'open' but not when I click 'open as administrator?'

That's not a normal function of the "Run " program. There is no way in blazes to "Run" as Admin, I suppose it's already elevated. You should get rid of that Pokki thing, and download "Classic Shell" which is the best of the free addons.

Searching for Run and running it as admin won't elevate.
Creating a shortcut per Shawn's tutorial and running it as admin won't elevate either.

Given that you work with an administrative account, in Windows 7 the procedure below creates a perfect elevated Run shortcut, but it may be quirky in Windows 8.

1. In an elevated command prompt run this command to create a scheduled task for launching "Run" with highest privileges:
Code:
Schtasks.exe /Create /RL Highest /TN Run /SC ONCE /ST 14:00 /TR "cmd.exe /c start rundll32 shell32.dll,#61"
2. Create a shortcut per Option 2 in Shawn's tutorial, but use the following command to run the task:
Code:
schtasks /run /tn Run

It seems to work fine on Windows 8.1 Preview EN

run-en.png

But it looks funky on Windows 8 RU, and sometimes the dialog runs non-elevated, but there's an elevation checkbox instead (could be a localization issue of some sort).

Anyway, give it a whirl and post the results :)

I like the idea of the checkbox being there.
