Windows 8 Boot Speed is INSANE

With Windows 7, my desktop took about 30 seconds to go from starting the boot logo to the login screen. On Windows 8? Today, it booted in about10 seconds . If it boots this fast on a standard hard drive, I can't imagine seeing it boot on a high end SSD. This is an upgrade install over Windows 8, and I still have lots of programs and such.

I'm thinking it's because the Preview version is essentially a Tablet edition. Might need someone with a table to confirm this truth.

I thought it was essentially an "Ultimate Edition" given the Bitlocker stuff in it. Also, it does have tablet features in it. I see them frequently on my touchscreen laptop (suck as the on-screen keyboard that is literally identical to that of Windows Phone 7...)

Mine used to be lightning fast until I started installing all of the apps I have on Win7.

Now it takes about two minutes.

Still, it's better than my Win7 bootup (almost 5 minutes) as I haven't insatalled all of the apps yet.

Ditto. Mine also slowed down but not as slow as win 7 and it is alpha software, so I have hope.

It is amazingly light and quick for an Alpha build, too. I can open up my laptop after a hibernation and the screen will be up in literally 3 seconds. It's great!

It's so fast I literally have sat down for 10 minutes just shutting down and rebooting. Why? Because it's fast and I can. :D

Yep, it's all about Hybrid Boot, but it has some flaws though. Actually, there's a video on Microsoft's Building 8 blog that shows the boot speed on a solid state drive. It's literally like resuming from sleep on a hard drive! It is insane!! :what:

Dunno what I do differently. I have not had this experience. I use a very standard, medium performance, computer for testing - particularly new OSs, in a dual boot environment. I have installed Windows 8, 32 Bit and 64 Bit, about six times each now, for various comparisons.
Install time lagged a little from A windows 7 install, but it is not so easy to assess that to the last few seconds, as there is a little extra required at the end - particularly if you wish to use a live ID. But by install, as with boot up, I count this from the dual boot menu to the desktop including the final internet connection.
My boot up, on the original install, was, with windows 7, about 55 seconds. With Windows 8, about 50 seconds - no big deal. Windows 7, in the original dual boot situation, took about 1minute and 35 seconds. This was mainly because, after it reached the Windows 8 new dual boot GUI, it rebooted to load Windows 7. I have no idea if this is normal, but it is how it has worked on all my installations. However, by changing back to the Windows 7 boot menu, I could see little difference in the boot times of either OS.
I should say these times were, with quite a bit of my regular software loaded in both OSs

Hmm, that's certainly very interesting. Maybe they haven't quite adapted it to specific bits of hardware yet. I dunno. Seems rather odd.

Hrm. Okay then. Mine seems to be pretty decent (within 30 seconds for a clean non-hybrid boot), and that's with about 15 pieces of software installed so far. Hybrid boot is even faster at about 10 seconds.
Keep in mind this is a fairly recent laptop though. Lenovo e520.

I should have mentioned that, for my own relative tests, I am only concerned with a cold boot to the dual boot menu. No hybrid, no tweaks.

Ah yes, fair enough then. I am really quite impressed with this Hybrid boot to be honest. I feel like my PC has now become a phone, so to speak.
I wonder if they will try to improve the cold boot more... I mean, if they're trying to shift focus towards UEFI, it'll be interesting to see how they deal with that (especially for dual boot users).

Maybe I am on the prowl looking for articles that support my claim. Look at these two side by side videos, for example. The guy has got something crooked in his Windows 7 setup. Mine does not take that long from the welcome screen to the complete desktop - usually about 2 seconds.

Yes my Windows 7 is very fast from log on to desktop as well, so dunno what's going on there. I suppose there are positives and negatives to both systems that create a widely different spectrum of boot times etc.

My Win8 is on a HDD and boots about as fast as my Win7 from the SSD. That is the good news. But we have to remember that this Developers edition is only a skeleton of the system. The full system may be more "normal".
