Solved Boot Order UEFI ASUS P8 Z77-V How to change?

When I access my UEFI during startup, the Boot Priority section is either empty or shows unrelated drives attached. I can select the drive from which to boot by clicking on the Boot Menu, then clicking on the drive desired.

I purchased a new Intel SSD and installed it as the "C" and "D" drives and was happily booting from that SSD until I added new HDDs to my system. I now have four HDDs plus the SSD. One of those HDDs still contains the original Root C bootup and Windows 8 system on it. I frequently now find the system, reason unknown, may choose to boot from the HDD rather than the SSD.

I cannot find the method for directing the UEFI bootup menu/priority steps... my goal is to have the computer boot from the SSD, which if it were to fail, then would secondarily boot from the HDD original Root C.

The computer arbitrarily changes the SSD from drive designation "C:" to "J:" and the HDD to "C:"... how to specify the SSD as the "C:" unless it fails or is removed?

Thank you in advance. DLGMEX

Enter your BIOS and set your SSD as Boot Option # 1 as shown:

Screenshot (62).png

Or set your optical drive as boot #1 and set your ssd as boot #2.

Thank You

Thank you "JustaTest"... I now have the SSD showing in the Boot Priority as #1 with a reference to ATAPI ???? C as priority item 2.

I would like to change that to the HDD with the original Windows 8 Pro partition and program. When I click on the HDD shown under the "P:.....", the system boots to that without allowing me to add that drive to one of the Boot Options...

But, the system now does show and use the SSD as the primary BootUp source...

And again, thank you

Can you tell me how you captured the image of your BIOS/UEFI settings page on your desktop screen? KEWL

You'll have to use BCDedit to add that in, that's what I had to do with my Media PC, because the default Boot drive is the IDE drive which is in there. It's because I installed Windows 8 after 7, and Windows 7 was the default boot drive for the system. Now, all of the boot info is still on the Windows 7 drive, even though Windows 8 is on its own drive. It was the only way I could do a dual boot.

On my main system, the Windows 7 drive and the Windows 8 drive can be booted directly. It's only my Media PC that can't be booted directly to 8. It's just how 8 got set up.

Justatest, did you pull that BIOS menu up from within Windows 8?

when I attempt to run bcdedit /default... not able to access the info.... I can access my UEFI Bios using the delete key during bootup ... on the basic screen I simply want to display bootup first from the DVD/Bluray drive or preferably from USB, second from the SSD and last from the HDD.

I'll restart the computer and copy the info shown. I bought this machine with Windows 7 Pro 64 originally installed, converted to the $15 Win8 Pro version and then added the free Media Center package. I obviously am way over my head in messing around with the BIOS stuff, but can read and follow instructions... unlike at my earlier age!

I am just trying to make life simpler by figuring out how to make a recovery disk/USB drive should everything go gunnysack... then, should the SSD fail, be able to easily boot from the HDD with the system already on it...???

Perhaps not a good plan? Thanks again

If you can't add the info using the command line BCDedit, you can add any extra Oses using Windows 8 Manager by Yamicsoft, it's a 15 day trial. I always use this program when the BCDedit command coldcocks me.

Learning New Stuff

downloading it as I type... thank you... report later with the info from the UEFI and what happens after running the Win8 Mgr

Much obliged...

Well, the download opened and I now know that the "ATAPI iHAS124 C" is the CD-DVD drive. Thus, I will try to learn how to burn the recovery disk should the system fail. So, that DVD drive can be the first to check for a bootable file. If there's nothing installed in the DVD drive, then I want the index 0 drive (SSD) to boot, last should that SSD fail, the backup HDD index 3 drive to boot.

Now to figure out how to manage this with the new Manager program... sounds like a lot of management and not many workers!!!

Again, learning something new everyday... fun thank you...

I cannot find the method for directing the UEFI bootup menu/priority steps

If you have installed Windows 8 in UEFI mode, Windows Boot Manager should be first boot device.

Yah, any device that says "ATAPI" is usually an optical drive. With the new version of Windows 8 Manager, the Boot Manager is under "Optimize" but otherwise it is the same.

on the UEFI basic (I guess) opening page, only the two boot priority drives are shown. I left the SSD as the #1 priority drive and the CD/DVD as the #2. Under the Advanced settings Boot Override area, all the HDDs are shown.

Is there a procedure to create a 3rd boot priority entry?

I don't understand why all the HDDs would not be possible "Available devices"... after all the J HDD does have the bootup info on it?

Why are you so concerned about ALL drives being displayed in the boot order. ONLY drives that are bootable (ie, contain an OS) should be there. Non-bootable (data-only) drives cannot be a boot source so no need to try and display them as such. Sorry if I am missing something here.

Thank You All

The system now does boot from the SSD first, looks at the CD-DVD next and apparently will go to the backup HDD partition which has the original system files from the MS windows download.

Here are the images (photos) from the UEFI Basic:
IMG_0281.JPG

IMG_0282.JPG

There are only 2 boot priority items, the SSD first and the CD-DVD next. I enter the "Advanced Mode" and view the following "override" sources which I selected from all the list shown under the "EZ Mode" Boot Menu above:
IMG_0284.JPG

And I do not see where to click on the "3" to add the HDD with original boot partition/files:
IMG_0283.JPG

I'm sorry for the unclear message, I am not trying to have the bootup system try to load data files... but only to setup the order of the partitions viewed in trying to start the computer. There are 3 possible sources for bootup: the CD-DVD drive with a recovery or program disc; the SSD Boot Partition and last the HDD Boot Partition from the original setup of the computer. So, adding that last as priority 3 would be the only undone step...

The system does run great, thanks to all of you... now to figure out what all of those innumerable management decision selections represent in the Manager program...WOW! Looks like the Library of Congress... another time, it's Five O'clock somewhere for me!

Thank You Dave Greene
