My screen resolution resets/reverts to lowest on startup

I just installed Windows 8, and each time I boot up my resolution reverts to 800x600 even though my native is 1680x1050. I have to constantly change it after login. I hope this is a simple fix, this is the first time I'm using Windows 8 as my normal OS.

hello Chaz,

i had that too. Had no lock screen and came directly to the startscreen where you have to hit anything to get to the password screen. All because at startup my display says resolution is 1024 to 784 (give or take, do not know exatly if it is 784, but it is in the 700 range).

not pleasant since in the beginning i could not get to the password screen, no mather what i did. So shutdown via the powerbutton and when restarting for the 3d time i did get the message that my OS could be corrupted.

but finally could get to the screen before the logon screen and give in the password.

After activating the lockscreen, everything is normal now. Even though at startup you get the display (1024-784 or so) when coming in the lockscreen, it is already set to 1920-1080.

My lockscreen is set to one hour.....but still is locking after 15 min....

Maybe you could try to activate the lockscreen and see if that give a difference.

Jeff

Hi Chaz,

Thanks for that. Any chance you could add the monitor, graohics (either onboard or specifc card ID), and the mobo info so we can get off to a running start. BTW, now that I know you have a desktop... are the monitor settings at default and are you connecting via VGA, DVI or HDMI?

Motherboard is a z87-deluxe, the card is a GTX 770 from Galaxy. I'm at work so I can't directly check. The monitor is connected via DVI.

Thanks for all the updates. Hopefully, you'll get some responses to look at by the time you get home. Now, if there is anything else you can think of please let us know; such as:

Has it always been this way since build and/or upgrade to Win 8?
If not, when did it start?
Any triggering event that might have contributed to the issue (recent driver installs, etc)?
Is it 800x600 all the time or just playing games?
Are drivers set to default or is there some overclocking going on?

Brand new install of windows 8 from yesterday. I did come across some people saying that I had to install newer video card drivers, but I believe they're as new as it gets.

Interesting?... Just make sure they installed correctly because now its starting to almost seem like Windows may be defaulting to a standard VGA driver. Cable is connected to PCI -e and not Mobo; yes? Graphics are set to PCI -e in BIOS?

If everything is resetting to the lowest size, check to make sure you are not being logged into a &^&%$ "temporary profile" - It will tell you this as you log on, it will say "Preparing Windows" instead of logging you in.

Whoa, it stopped doing it! Now I go native when I boot up :)

If only I knew what I did. I did re-installed my video drivers but they didn't seem to fix the problem immediately. I also remembered playing some video games too. I also tried changing the resolution in the NVIDIA control panel. I also went into the windows boot options where you can boot into safe mode, etc, but I didn't do anything there. I also did a windows update, but all it was is just a patch for .NET.

Well that's all the things that I remember doing. I'm sorry if someone else is having the same problem and can't figure out how to fix it :(

Go back to the Nvidia Control Panel and check for "HDCP" - See if that is on and running. Also check your "PhysX" settings, which should be set to Auto. Also, go to the :Adjust Desktop Size and Position" panel and see if you have checked "Override Scaling Mode set by Games and Programs" - Uncheck that if checked.

It just sounds like something is overriding your desktop settings and setting it back to the lowest res. You have any games that change the resolution? maybe it';s setting it back to the lowest setting on exit. How about startup programs, what you got going?

What's with all of those "File Missing" on those startup items? Also, VMware is loading, does that need to run at startup? You should try disabling all of those, see if it is still booting to the lowest res. You don't have to run any nVidia helper apps on startup.
