Solved Make google think I'm using win7...????

Because I always get that stupid blue bar on top, asking me to add it to my start screen... which I can't do as metro is disabled.

I've never been prompted by Google to add it to the Start screen but I have seen a blue bar prompting me to install Google on my phone. I don't think you can do anything about it. I've gotten the blue bar in both Win 7 & 8.

EDIT: I found some info that may help if you are using a browser that supports the extension Adblock Plus. You can add a custom filter, ##DIV#mgmhppd that blocks the blue bar. So far it seems to be working for me.

If you are using Firefox, type "about:home" in the search area and make that your homepage ( a nice alternative).

If you are using IE, you can change your home page to Mozilla Firefox Start Page which contains a Google search.

The reason I am suggesting these alternatives is that I seem to remember Google still pestering me when I was on Windows 7, and although the message was quite different (don't remember the exact text) it was also nearly impossible to remove as well.

I just ignore that cack, mostly cos I use Chrome more than IE. It will never ever really go away, because it wants you to make Chrome your default browser. So, you click "Sure Thanx" and it makes Chrome default and adds the start screen item. Well, you never use IE again. But wait, you open IE, and it's still there. It's a no win situation, you can hit "sure thanx" until you are blue in the face and it will keep showing up. I tried getting rid of that for one whole day, to no avail. Maybe someone knows a way to trick it.

There is no way but I have a rep waiting for anybody that can develop one.

Well, we would have to tell IE that it's on Windows 7 - ONLY for the main Googol page. I know there are addons that can fake browsers out, just have to see if someone has developed something like what I describe.

Won't work. Windows 7 also (at least did before) gets the same blue bar with a different prompt to install Google Chrome.

But at least in Win 7 it goes the hell away if you inSTALL Chrome...

Looks like Microsoft blocked the Google blue bar trick because it appears to be fixed in Win 8.1 using IE 11:

OOPS.
Didn't even noticed it.

Google is overall a white, pretty empty page with or without an extra bar.

Not sure, does it happen in all browsers...

Guess I should have mentioned I'm using a Firefox derivative....Cyberfox x64. I would assume that it does that to all ff based browsers at least. And I'm running 8, and not 8.1.

I'm on Pale Moon x64 on W8 as well and the blue bar is also seen.

I knew that you were running 8.0 but I just though that you might have an interest in going that route because your initial post indicate some interest in going back to Win 7. Sorry if you consider that information to be misplaced or irrelevant.

Cyberfox even has an Amd optimized version
