Solved fn z keys not working after recovery done

its a long story with other posts here but after the recovery to fix the mail and people tiles which kept reverting back when trying to type, everything was OK until I went to download updates from HP 1Gb worth and then restarting the computer to find I had no wireless recognition, and it seems the downloads didn't download. after a long session with HP and a system restore to before this fiasco, the wireless is back working, but when playing solitaire the fn and z won't let me undo which is a nuisance. also I now have the annoying red alert from the HP assistant wanting me to download. The HP customer help has said don't download all these updates. what a mess

The system may have a program like Dell's "Quickset" which sets the function for the Fn key combos. I don't remember what HP calls this, you just have to read trhe program descriptions, and download the appropriate controls.

That's it though, you have to look around for a version that will work. It should have been included in the HP download.

What you will have to do, if you ever do that download again? Make sure you connect your laptop through a hard wired connection to the router. Because, the HP download may have included an update for your WiFi adapter, which it tries to put in while still downloading other stuff causing the whole package to fail. So Plug it in directly to your router with a cable and try it again. If you can choose the downloads, look for the Hotkeys package, which should be the one for your system.

Usually, if you allow the HP website to detect your system, it WILL direct you to the proper support download page, so do that as well, and once you are there, get the Hotkeys addon.

not happy, did the downloads suggested by hp with the cable, thought it went well but 3 didn't install, restarted the computer and the wireless in not recognised, exactly the problem I had a few days ago, so I did a system restore and the wireless is back on but the computer is so slow, so must be more problems but hopefully a call to customer service will get it sorted out

Sounds like they simply don't know the right files to tell you to get. Tell us your exact model number and I'll have a look in their support section.

hi again, the button driver downloaded and the quick launch keys, but the other one failed or I stopped it after about 4 hours trying to downoad, and also when checking for drivers HP didn't recognise my product, I note there is a guide to troubleshooting a download that is not downloading on the HP site so will also try that, you get a plus for all your help

Well, the one you needed is the Quicklaunch. It SHOULD have worked. I have a lot of experience with the HP Support site. The site may have been overloaded, or being maintained, try the download later.

There is also a tool on the HP Support site that detects your exact system and then shunts you over to a page with the correct support files. To use it, it installs a program that allows them to read your system, it is usually pretty painless, make sure you have the newest Java and Flash installed.

That Quick Launch program is what you need to make your Fn keys work right.

Hm, the ones I found were for Windows 8. The Quick Launch program is important because it makes all of those Fn key combos work, like brightness, volume, and switching displays.
