Solved Weird keyboard problem - new laptop

My friend received a new laptop running windows 8 (acer v5-471).

When the 'w' key is pressed it brings up the search page With settings filter selected (e.g apps, settings, file filters) when shift + w is pressed it prints 'W'.
All other keys work as expected, the keyboard layout is set correctly and no keys are stuck (easy to tell as its backlighted)

Any ideas?

Thanks Rob

Edit: the WindoWs key seems to do the same thing :\

EDIT: Was a hardware problem and the laptop has been returned. Tried a linux live cd and the problem persisted.

Maybe the Keyboard is bad, it does this no matter what program you are in? What if you are typing something and it requires the letter "w"?

WHat programs are installed that have Key Combinations set? Is there an Acer program that does this?

Yeah this happens system Wide Weather in a modern UI app or in desktop mode e.g notepad. As soon as the key is pressed it goes to the search page With the settings filter selected.

I couldn't see a program but I'll have another look, I might just run a Linux live cd because that Will tell me a if its hardware problem or software problem. I can't do that until Wednesday though.

Thanks for the help.

I don't have that program. Just to let you know I won't have access to the laptop until tomorrow night at the earliest.

I opened the cmd via the windows 8 recovery manager and the w key works as it should there.

What ever is happening is the equivalent of pressing the Windows key + W. Its almost like the windows key and w are mapped to Windows key + w as pressing either key on their own does the shortcut.

I think it is either,

Software: acer launch manager or something similar hotkey type program.

Hardware: w is triggering two key presses though a hardware fault.

Thanks for all your help, I'll update the post if I find the problem.

Yah, it's very odd, it has to be some software loaded into your OS which is controlling Hot Keys. Do a search for Hot Keys and see if anything similar to your problem pops up in the results.
