Weird Windows 8 problem?!

Hi everyone, hope somebody can help me here...

I booted up my laptop as normal and all of my programs and documents are missing. Desktop background and all settings are ok, my internet connected is still saved and my deleted items are still in the recycle bin. Really odd.

Got about 6 months work not backed up (I know).

Anybody got any ideas what has happened?

Just for info, nothing new installed, just shut down and booted up as normal.

Welcome to Windows 8 Forums! You may have a virus that hid everything. First you have to run "Unhide"

Unhide Download

Run that first, then run any AV you have, then download TDSSkiller and Malwarebytes Anti Rootkit and check for rootkits.

Ha, it's a common problem. One nasty virus in particular hides everything on your hard drive. In some cases, it actually DELETES all of your Program Files entries.

Thanks for coming back so quickly, should the files be available after running unhide? I ran that earlier but haven't done the others yet, didn't seem to make a difference?

Are any of the programs executable when accessed via the explorer view (ie, navigate to a few exe files and test). Also, please confirm that you lost everything (eg, data, image, and videos) that you created and/or downloaded; yes?

Just done a search for .mp3 and .ai and all files are there plus they all execute, feel better they are there and still function but still no change explorer wise.

So, you think you haven't lost your personal data but you just can't see the details in explorer; yes? If so, you may either still have an active virus (as previously suggested) or you are looking at the remnants of same. With that said, I personally cannot offer you a step-by-step on how to proceed from here; however, if no one else steps in to assist in that area, this might be your next step:

Good luck.

Are you in any kind of "Temporary Profile"? That would do the same thing, but you would see some icons on your desktop - Your Start Screen however, would be blank like that.

I've managed to find the files but the don't seem to be syncing to the documents folder. At least I can back everything up before any changes or fixes. Thanks for all your help. I'll let you know how I get on.

Yah, if your Docs and Music files ain't in your Docs and Mucis folders, then you are NOT in your usual profile. Were you using an MS account, or a local account?

If you are in a temporary profile, you will see "Windows has loaded a temporary profile" in some large letters as it boots up.

Its not a local account, something I will be changing once I get this sorted. Any idea how to get in the usual account?

Not a local account, but NOT your usual account, right? Hold on I'll brb

Ok, check here.

Brink (Shawn) helped me through this, so if that don't help you figure it out, I'll ask him to intervene.

While you are in Windows, open Explorer and go into your Users folder. Look for a user folder called TEMP. Also, look for all iterations of your MS account user name. Take a screenshot of your Users folder too.

Check my edit, click that link. There are other threads regarding the same problem, you can search "temporary Profile" in the forum search box to find them. Ironically, this started happening with Windows Vista.

No - It's EASY, once you get through the initial stages of it. Check through the posts. You just need to be able to get into Safe Mode Admin to do what it says. Don't do a "refresh" unless you wanna delete all of your apps.
