Today I left my pc on the desktop whilst I got ready to go to work, and when I returned there was a 'Microsoft sponsored' advert on my screen for some software or something. Nothing online was 'live'. The url was channel157.com or something similar.

Message for you Microsoft and anybody else reading this - piddle OFF, If I want to read ads, unsolicited ads, on my pc - I'll turn it off first and take up gardening!!! Its an intrusion and I'll sue.

It may be a virus though. :"Channel157.com" is not related to MS in any way shape or form

channel157.com Whois Lookup & IP | Whois.net

You could have a Virus or a Rootkit, and even tough there are no instances of IE apparently running, check your running processes and see if there are any hidden instances of IE. If so, you have some kind of virus that has hijacked your IE. Try running TDSSKILLER and Malwarebytes Anti Rootkit as well as GMER and Sophos

What exactly makes you think this was "Microsoft Sponsored"? Because it said so? You believe that? And you believe the popups that say your Adobe Flash is out of date too?

^^Bookmark this reply, and do not forget it.^^

You have been conned, there is no way that MS caused the Avert on your screen if they had then you are the only one on planet earth to have received this Advert thus you should feel lucky to be so special.

Sorry if I came on a little strong, albeit it seems that when this happens to folks the first the thing they do is to blame the OS manufacture regardless if it is MS, Apple, or one of the Linux flavors.

ANY item that pops up on your screen, is possibly a virus of some type, -even "Antivirus" messages. Remember the Virus that took over XP's security center? It looked exactly like security center, but it was not. The people who make these things try to make them look like the system generated it. Sirefef actually hijacks Defender, and you have to rename the defender program and folder to keep it from running. It also deletes your Firewall. Check your Firewall, if it is not running try to turn it on, if it will not turn on, well then you have Sirefef.

One way to possibly protect yourself is to "Personalise" your Windows GUI (e.g. change the Font Type, Font Style or the Colour Scheme).
This only works against poorly written malware.

Years ago I saw one of those fake XP alerts.
I knew it was a fake message as it used the default blue colour scheme (I was using the XP silver scheme).

definitely nothing to do with Microsoft. I don't think it is a virus either. It is related to film channel sites. Ring any bells?

The wildcard--- * --- Will or should block anything from channel157.com.

Code:

That's like putting a band aid on a severed limb - It's not the root cause of the problem, which is some kind of virus or rootkit. You need to scan your system extensively with TDSSKILLER and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and GMER, one of those will find the culprit.

I do not use films online - of any sort, but will have to check with others.
I certainly did not know Adobe Upgrades were false - unless told something we are all ignorant! Check my sig.
I will check out Lee's answer and potential solutions this evening when I can take my time. Have Sophos loaded in pc.

IObit is probably what put it in! It's not Adobe Updates that are false, it's that popup for a FLASH update. That popup is always connected to websites where people upload files for other people to grab, like Sendspace and BillionUploads.com. Actually, those storage sites are popular for people who share IPA files for iOS devices. And, they change all the time. It used to be all done through Fileape, when Fileape was shut down, new sites came up, Maybe there is one site you use commonly to download files, whatever it is, is sending you these fake flash updates. You can always tell a true Flash update will show up on your Taskbar, it will never pop up as a web page. You will get a rectangular shaped upgrade box, it will be red, and it will ask you if you want to download and install the Flash update. But you will SEE it also down in your tray. That's how you know it is legit. I'll try to get mine to pop up so I can make a screen cap. Also, if you are not SURE - Go the the actual Adobe website for Flash and you can actually TEST your flash right on that site, if you need an update, it will tell you.

Don't trust any IObit programs, always use TDSSKILLER and Malwarebytes Anti Rootkit, those are the two best programs to find rootkits. And try Eset Anti Virus 6, it's a 7 day trial, that should be enough to eliminate anything else you have.
