Probably the average user is not supposed to use it. MS want them in those little squares as much as possible.

They obviously realise power users want to stay in the desktop, so have kept that vestige of a start menu.

Unfortunately, it is a kludge. A lot of functions aren't there any more, so that throws you back into the metro madness.

If they had kept all the start menu functions, then I am pretty sure MS think hardly anybody would venture near the metro monster.

Really wish that this menu wasn't so obscure. i use it almost everyday. Most people I know on Windows 8 have no idea whatsoever that it is there, or even exists.
