Same files in two drives but one uses 70 GB more.

Can somebody help to solve this mystery?

I had a Seagate MyBackup 1TB external drive. When it was half full I decided to buy another one, the same Seagate, same model, same 1TB.

So I copied the files to the new one and I do backups every week or so for the changes.

Today I noticed that the old one uses 70GB more than the other.

I mean, 70GB is a lot. I checked the files carefully, it's all my movies. Both are the same capacity, 931 GB. Even same color.

The only difference I found is that the newest has 16MB buffer and the old one only 8MB.

Does anyone know what could be happening?

Just in case it is relevant, I first used a program called Cobian Backup to make incremental backups and so on, but it was a mess and I uninstalled, formatted the new one and copied the files directly.

Maybe Cobian took 70GB of drive #1 and they are now lost in nowhere? I don't detect hidden files, hidden partitions, etc.

Thanks in advance.

What do you see if you connect the HDDs and then open "Disk Management"?

Bizarre

That is bizarre.

I assume that the "Different" screenshots come from File Explorer?
Where did the "Identical" screenshots come from?

Have you run "Disk Check" on "Seagate 1"?

Have you checked that your backup images are valid?
If they are, you could reformat "Seagate 1" and copy the data from "Seagate 2" to it.

I can't think of anything better at the moment.
Sorry. :(

The "Different" ones come from right-click on the drive and Properties.

The "identical" ones come from selecting all the files inside the drive and right-click - Properties.

I run Check Disk and run Hard Disk Sentinel for superextensive information. Everything is OK.

I don't have any backup images. It is just movies that I go passing every week from one disk to the other one.

I guess it must be some hidden space from when I used this Cobian Backup thing the first day. It worked wrong and created some files and folders, but in disk #2, not in disk #1.

It takes many hours to format and copy all the movies again, I will first try to find the problem.

Thanks!

Sorry, I saw Cobian Backup and thought you were storing images.

It could be hidden space from the backup program.
IIRC, Windows Server Backup would hide the backup drive/partition, so that you couldn't see it in Windows Explorer.

Maybe Cobian Backup does something similar, still I would have thought that you could see it in "Disk Management".

If you have access to a Live Ubuntu CD, you could view the drive using GParted.
Another option is a Disk Partition CD that runs when you boot up your PC (e.g. Partition Wizard)?
You could check what they indicate about "Seagate 1" (e.g. show if there is a hidden partition).

If the mystery 70 GB is at the start of the HDD, getting it back could take longer than reformatting. :(

Good idea, I have some Linux in a pendrive fr these situations. I'll check.

But indeed it looks like either I format or lose th 70GB.

Thanks a lot.

Just an update to say that I couldn't make any Linux run from the USB stick because of this bloody UEFI that is horrible. I tried everything and two different distros and it never run.

So I just formatted the drive #1, copied the files from #2 and now it is exactly the same used space in both.

I guess thos 70GB were missing for some hidden partition made by this Cobian Backup crapware.

Thanks a lot.

Maybe you have File Compression enabled on the folder where one of those files is located. Remember, under XP when you got Properties for a Folder, it would say "Compress Files to save space" - You could either apply it to the whole drive, or just selected folders.

Actually I see it in his image, but in Spanish. Maybe at one time the folders where you had some files were compressed, but later you uncompressed the drive. That would account for the change in overall size

You used the backup Programme to make an identical copy of the drive, or does it copy as it is used? Maybe there are "Previous Versions" of some files on the larger drive. But the smaller drive, has MORE files than one one with more space used. That's odd, so you may have a couple of HUGE files in there, 35 GB each.

Hi kmint,

The difference may be hidden in shadow copies, so I'd check it first by running this command elevated:
Code:
vssadmin list shadowstorage
Post the results.
