Finally, the licensing issues are not as simple as you seem to think they are. You are not legally allowed to run a copy of Vista in a VM on W8 without a separate license for Vista.
I finally got some help from the software folks. Got the core files necessary to get the Windows 8 laptop up and running. All the files are way out of date and the now the task is to d/l updates,updates, and more updates. This laptop is sort of a price leader. The operations are very sloooow. But hey it's working! There is a restriction of migrating a physical machine to a VMware virtual machine - and that will probably apply to most installations.
NOTE You cannot move original equipment manufacturer (OEM) licenses between physical machines. The
license is attached to the server when you purchase it from the OEM and cannot be reassigned. You can only
reassign retail and volume licenses to new physical servers. If you migrate an OEM Windows image, you must
have a Windows Server Enterprise or Datacenter Edition license to run multiple virtual machines
