Window 8.1 on Samsung Series 7 Ultra

Hello all!

I recently upgraded my Samsung Series 7 Ultra to the Windows 8.1 preview to check out it's new offerings. It's ok I suppose. Some positives and some negatives. Anyway on to my point:

So with the update came some unwanted changes. It seems to have disabled most of my func keys on the top row of my keyboard. Also, it now no longer saves my touchpad settings. They are reset to default everytime the system is rebooted.

I'm guessing this has to do with the Samsung software that controls these features not yet upated or ready to run on 8.1. It's just annoying so I thought I'd post for all you smart folks to see if anyone has any suggested remedies or similar issues from the update.

Thanks!

How did you install 8.1, as an upgrade of clean install? Did you try reinstalling your drivers for your functions keys from Samsung?

This was an upgrade install from the Windows Store. Upon better google searching I found that this is a known and reported issue among several manufacturers when updating to 8.1. I considered reinstalling Samsung drivers, but cannot find them on their site (at least they have non listed). Search results from Google suggested a fix may be rolled out in Windows Update. So I installed all updates and things were not fixed. In fact they worsened because now Chrome and Firefox do not work. Seems only IE works. Guess I should have held off on the update all together...

Hi Ricman,

This is for Windows 8 rather than 8.1 but with any luck will work... Samsung have a SW Update application which adds back the extra function keys, so I'd give that a try.

I would suggest you create a System Restore point before trying this, in case it doesn't work and you want to uninstall and then restore back.

Edit: I see there are earlier posts in the thread which I didn't see- maybe the SW Update won't work. :(

If you check Model on Samsung support, you will still end up at SW Update download page.

Why did you not update from the Store to Windows 8 Preview.

So I tried to hold out and hoped it would get fixed. I let windows updates and Samsung SW updates happen and things just ended up getting worse (my browsers eventually stopped working).

If you created a restore point before the update I suggest rolling back to that. I wasn't so wise to do so, so I completely restored windows back to 8. Or if it doesn't bother you that much live with the problems and do the full 8.1 install later when it rolls out.

Also experiencing the same problem. I hope somebody has informed Samsung about this and they are fixing this fast...

How could I perform a true clean install back to Win8 easily?

I eventually went back to Win8 from the 8.1 preview by using system restore in Windows and just going back to fully stock Windows. I didn't have a restore point saved from before the update, but I imagine if you have that you can just roll back to that point and it will revert the update?

I know 8.1 has been officially released now but after that experience and reading about the experience of others using Samsung's I think I'll continue to hold off. Sounds like 8.1 is still a bit buggy for everyone anyway. Bummer.
