Desktop icons move around when my Windows 8 screen rotates

Hello-

I have a Windows 8 tablet/ultrabook (Lenovo Yoga). I primarily use the desktop to operate and have many icons and shortcuts arranged to facilitate the use of my computer.

When I use my PC in tablet mode, sometimes I rotate the screen to read PDFs, certain webpages, etc. When I rotate the screen back to a horizontal mode, all my carefully placed icons and shortcuts are shuffled around the desktop. I realize that when I rotate the screen the icons move because they have to temporarily reorient themselves to portrait vs landscape, but shouldn't they return to their original position when I rotate the screen back to the horizontal mode?

Is there a way to lock icons in place with Windows 8?

Thanks.

Iconoid may help:

I'll give it a try. I was hoping that there was something internal to Windows 8 that would do the trick. It seems like these types of downloads are hit or miss.

Thanks for the download link.

Nope. it's because Windows 8 wants to shift icons around in accordance to screen orientation. I use LCARSx32 which crams all my icons into a smaller area when it's active, when I leave that Desktop, all my icons are scattered to the four winds. I used Iconoid to get them to stay in the same relative positions.

Be careful with ht though, only set the Orientation settings, there are a few other things in there, like icon hiding, that can cause confusion when set.

He-he. Thanks for that. I was wondering why my icons kept disappearing after a few seconds.....the program defaults to hide icons after a short period of time!

Hi, am experiencing the same problem. Good to know there is a solution, thank you for that!

But this really should not be an issue. Is it seriously possible that the makers of Windows 8 did not think that it would be annoying to have to constantly reorganise all the icons on one's desktop? I mean I would think that most people actually do organise their icons in a certain way (not randomly), and do it for a reason. Or did they seriously think that people would never use the desktop when in touch-mode? In case of pdfs, this is practically impossible (at least when using the regular adobe acrobat -- I don't even know whether there is a metro/modern UI version), since opening a pdf file, even when locating it by means of the modern UI, takes you automatically to the desktop... And that is one of the main advantages of having a lightweight touchscreen laptop (being able to read and highlight/annotate pdf's like a paper document by hand)!

Well I'll try this third-party softwhere, but if there is an internal way of doing this (or will be) I'd be interested to know! (Like most users concerned about performance and overviewability of their system, I try to minimise the amount of software I install on my computer).

No, ya gotta use the 3rd party software, sorry.

Iconoid will keep everything where you set it.
