Usually I have UltraEdit set as my default TXT program handler.
But suddenly today it went away and all I see is 'Pick an app' for the 'Opens with' setting on TXT properties.
I have tried to set the default program back to UltraEdit using these methods:
1) UltraEdit's own file associations menu
2) The 'Change' button on .txt properties next to Pick an app
3) The default programs editor
4) the default program control panel
5) the Choose default program property on the text file
None of these methods work, after I make the change the default is still 'Pick an app'.
I can open UltraEdit and open the text file, or I can select it when I get the 'Pick an app' list, but it is never permanent.
This is driving me crazy.
Has anyone else seen this problem? Google didn't give me any ideas.
EDIT:
I am wrong about it happening 'just now'. I restored my last image from June 30 and the problem was still there at that time.

I had this start today for all files I used to be able to open with "Notepad". Does it give you UUedit in the Popup List when you right click on it? If so then it's exactly what my system is doing. Not for TXT files, but for other ones like "Reg" files etc.

For some reason, the Default App, UUedit, is not propagating through the registry for the file type. As you can see with mine, it's only listing Dreamweaver and something called "vsta" as my "openwith" apps, but Notepad is listed down there in "Shellnew" - Try setting UUedit in there, or try re-installing UUedit - Are you running the full version of it or just the Trial version?

Hmph... Very Odd, try rebooting and do it again, maybe do an SFC /scannow. Have you at any time used a different app to open a TXT file? Maybe a tile app, or Onenote or anything?

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I've rebooted several times.
I've never used any other app to open .txt files until I tried to solve this problem.
I use UltraEdit to open quite a large variety of file types, not just Text Files - Binary files, log files, SFZ files - many types.
I used UltraEdit daily, I've never seen this happen before.
The last thing that got installed on my system was Firefox 22.0 on July 2.

I do regular Acronis image backups and my last one was on June 30.
I just restored to that date, but the problem is still there - so I guess I was wrong about it just happening now. I just noticed it now, but it must have been like this for some time.

1. Download and start Process Monitor.
2. Right-click a text file -> Open with - UltraEdit.
3. Right-click a text file -> Open with - Notepad.
4. Stop logging and upload the PML somewhere.
For 2 and 3, make sure the checkbox "Use this app" is checked.
For 3, has it changed the association to Notepad?
