Do you agree the Windows 8.1 Start Button is a Joke?

It adds exactly 2 features. There is a button to click on instead of just going to the corner and clicking on the small tile that appears. Right-click adds exactly one feature, an easy way to shutdown/reboot.

It does not provide the nice compact well organized Start Menu of Windows 7 and previous versions of Windows. Fortunately Classic Shell and others still provide full featured start buttons/menus.

It's certainly not the start button that we had on Windows7.

It's certainly not the start button that we had on Windows7.

that's because its win8 ,to each there own ,I didn't use the win7 start /all programs very often ,so I don't mind the new win8 Start ,kind of getting to like it .

I guess the new start in win8.1 will be easier for the average user to find and find the shutdown

Sure, but it's about time that haters start giving the new start menu a chance, because it is actually faster than the old one.

Now it's even easier, as you can make the tiles very small and gather the icons in folders very easily.

It really is faster than the old start menu, just give it a chance and forget classic shell and those ugly things.

Get modern.

The Start Screen is NOT the Start Menu. Having a separate tile for each and every possible executable file related to an installed program (where we get work done, not an app) is a real mess. I've used Windows 8 since the day it was released. I do go to the Start Screen to access those few Apps that are useful. The new small tiles are nice, about the size of an icon on the desktop, but are somewhat less valuable since there are no words to go with them. The Start Screen is simply no proper replacement for the Start Menu.

If you want the best of both worlds then provide both worlds. Along with the other improved features on Windows 8 providing both "start schemes" would make a lot of sense. A convertible without top doesn't provide dual functionality, a convertible with a top that is easily operated is a wonderful automobile.

That's not a joke to me, there were other, bigger ones.

It was expected to go to the Screen instead of the Menu... just like Win7 File Recovery that was killed, with what do I replace that one?

I guess it depends on each user and your needs and habits, but I have few apps and programs installed and everything fits in the first screen. If I need to open something that is not there, I just type it and takes a second.

I mean, I never ever see the whole lot of apps, folders and annoying files that are in the long list of installed stuff.

Microsoft needs to push people to use Metro or get familiar with it for the future, which is hybrid mobile/desktop, that's it, and their refusal to offer the old menu is quite understandable. If they lose the mobile war they will die.

Their refusal is pointless once that there are several third party start menu replacements (some free and good looking) for Windows 8 and there will be for Windows 8.1 too. If they don't do others will !

There are many jokes you could find apart from that start button, look at the Eastman colour fish, why? just to remind us of Win 7 perhaps.

I always use RocketDock and create shortcuts for all of my needs, and have always kept my Start button and taskbar permanantly hidden in Wxp and W7 so the Start button was never an issue for me in 8, as I keep it hidden anyway.

Not so pointless at all. First, everyone is forced to see and get familiar with Metro/Modern. Second, most people will complain and cry rivers but will never install Start8 for not spending 4€ after spending hundreds in the computer and for not learning how to use it.

My opinion is that Microsoft should have made a very conscious and even expensive campaign to make people familiar with and have a positive idea of Metro, presenting it with style and passion as the new wonder, just like Apple would have done.

Hybrids, Plug-ins, Electric Cars are the future. Your next car must have some of those types of features as their primary operating mode. With some inconvenience you will be allowed to use the gas engine.

From a marketing perspective, the usual way to handle it would be:

Have both methods included. Make the method MS wants so attractive that people voluntarily move to it over time.

MS deliberately are not doing that. I am pretty sure I know why.

I was pretty shocked that there was no option to change it to work the way the W7 start menu does. Honestly, it looks to me like they only halfway listened to the outcry. So...now I have a Start button that just takes me to the default startup screen, and a blank spot on my taskbar where the Start8 flag should be for when I want to use an actual start menu.
